Merikh
The Mantle of Death, Merikh
Merikh was once a mortal human, but he made a dark pact with Shar, the vengeful sister of the goddess of Selune, to gain incredible power. As a warlock, Merikh drew his magical abilities from his patron, Shar, and was able to break the laws of magic that governed the world. With Shar's backing, Merikh built up powerful and massive undead armies and convinced savage races like the orcs and gnolls to join forces with him.
Merikh's powers were immense, and he was able to turn entire cities into undead-infested wastelands. He was a master manipulator and was able to play upon the weaknesses of others to further his own goals. He was also a powerful vampire, and he used his immortality and the ability to turn others into vampires to further his own power.
Despite his many victories, Merikh was ultimately defeated by worshipers of Mystra, who created seven holy sites that enabled her worshipers to access powers that would otherwise break the laws of magic, like Merikh. With this power and the combined forces of civilized races like elves, dwarves, humans, gnomes, halflings, and similar races, the evil forces of the vampire warlock were repelled.
According to legend, in a final battle on the Black Island, Merikh and his forces were beaten back by an army led by the elven brothers themselves, Thoril and Leon White. In a moment of glorious sacrifice, Thoril is said to have utterly obliterated all traces of Merikh with a powerful spell that also took his own life. However, rumors persist that Merikh may have somehow survived, or that he may return one day to continue his quest for domination. The uncertainty of Merikh's ultimate fate and the struggles of rebuilding in the aftermath of the war have led to continued tension between cities and races even after hundreds of years.
