Gerumani's Falls Myth in Alluria | World Anvil

Gerumani's Falls

Legend has it that one of the first adventures the Heroes of Felfield embarked upon took them into a nearby large cliff hills to deal with the fledgling Redaxe Tribe, at the time mostly made up of goblins. During this fight within a cliff face cave, Gerumani made the move to tear down a cave-in and let the water from deep within flow freely, the powerful current washing away their foes. The Heroes were caught off-guard by the sheer power and volume of the water, but working togther, tying themselves to each other and with some masterful acrobatics by Azarael, they escaped alive, avoiding the sheer drop the water now flowed out over. This location thereafter continued to be a waterfall, a new source of water which nourished the lands. As the village of Felfield expanded into a city, it eventually crept up towards the water feature, considered a sight worth visiting, catching the twilight rays in a rainbow that dances across the cliff faces.

Historical Basis

There are documents from the era from Paladin Felfield himself stating him sending the Heroes off to face the Redaxe Tribe on more than one occasion, and who still have a foothold deep within the cliff to this day. There are other documents from the mayor of the time talking about the new waterfall and several meetings on what this diversion of water means for the surrounding lands. As for the specifics of the event, these are told by the faithful of the Gods of the Second Age, each varying slightly from the respective god's perspective, and on the intent of Gerumani's actions.

Spread

Within Kingswood and Benabry this tale is well known, considering their respective devotion to the Gods of the Second Age and the fact of both nations having called Felfield their own at some point in the past. Beyond them the tale is mostly known by the devout and scholars, or those whom have pilgrimaged to Felfield.

Variations & Mutation

Depending on the source, some say that Gerumani removed the rock out of curiousity rather than intent. Others say they did so after the caves had been cleared instead of during the fight. Faithful of Azarael tell about how he single-handedly pulled the others out of the water, while servents of Aibeleasiri speak of her jumping into the water to rescue Azarael with the aid of her wolf Ruilla, a character seldom mentioned in the other's tellings of this tale.

In Literature

Due to the early nature of this adventure there were few scholars to document it, so naturally it shows up with some of the wildest interpretations. The one of most renown is from 'Second Age Champions' by the scholar known as Shae Dais.

In Art

Many pieces of art depicting Felfield contain the waterfall somewhere in the image, either as part of the backdrop or central to the piece. 'Fall to Rise' by Bella Reimourne is a famous artpiece of the legend, encapsulating Azarael pulling the others to safety in the top half, with the bottom half showing a rainbow waterfall washing goblins away. 'Felfield, Home' was one of the last pieces painted by Ari Caralaos before his passing, a landscape piece of the city with the waterfall visible in the background near the left of the art piece.
