Ubar Khaganate

The Ubar Khaganate was the name its descendants, the Rotsava, give to their long-lost ancestors' huge nomadic empire that ruled vast swathes of the South. So much of this ancient civilization has been lost to time, as its people, the Rotsava, keep no records of their history. The word Ubar translates to "ours" or "us" in Ubari, the Rotsavan language.

At its greatest extent, the Khaganate stretched from the edge of the Southern coast all the way up North to the Caleian heartland, which at the time was nothing but a sparse collection of unimportant villages. The exact location of the Khaganate's own capital has been forgotten, as most lived in tents rather than stone buildings that could have survived the test of time. In fact, the only sources of information on this Khaganate that defined an entire Age is found mostly in its stone temples to their lost gods and Elven records, neither of which paint a clear picture of their civilization. Foreign records especially tend to be extremely unclear about them, with elven records being especially biased due to the long history of turmoil between the two.

Even though the Khaganate has been quiet in its millennia-old grave, its influence is still felt. From its surviving southern architecture to its still-intact infrastructure network, the legacy of this utterly forgotten empire is hard to ignore.

Military

The Khaganate was not so much a traditional centralized state more than it was a collection of nomadic armies answering to dozens of horse lords, each one swearing fealty to the Khagan. This decentralization meant that the military could respond to threats incredibly quickly, but did so in an often disorganized fashion, relying on strength in numbers and fear rather than superior strategy and planned attacks. In the final battles of the empire, this disorganization became painfully clear as the same armies that had swept through the world three centuries prior were now being divided and crushed by the far smaller (though magically superior) Elven forces.

Trade & Transport

Though the Khaganate was little more than an army with a state, it did place an emphasis on upholding and defending the lucrative North-South trading routes, going as far as to burn, loot and sack other trade routes they had no control over so as to steer trade into their territory. Part of their fall can be attributed to their loss of control over these trade routes, as well as the rise of maritime trade. As a purely land-based power, the Khaganate had absolutely no control over the new sea-based trading routes and as such, they began to lose relevance in the long run, allowing for rival powers, particularly the Elven dominions, to emerge.
