Steamwork

The knowledge on how to operate machinery build with Steamworking technology has been lost to the ages

Dwarves first developed the recently rediscovered Steamwork technology. Utilizing heat and steam to power machinery that would otherwise be powered by hand is the basis of Steamworking. Little is known of the history of Steamwork, but what few fictional turned historical books have to offer, have now been studied in an effort to recapture lost heritage in various Dwarven houses. Believed to be passed down from the Gods themselves, the Turunak Dwarves were the first to harness the power of steam, combining their knowledge of metalworking and their use of the renowned Uthorhil. These two combined tested the minds of Turnakian engineers as they worked to automate the production of various goods and metals. Many facilities whose purpose was solely to purify ore can be found deep within various mountains and villages across Lothlonde.

Keeping the secrets to how the Steamwork technologies operated to the word of mouth teachings from master to apprentice meant no other race or family of Dwarves could capitalize on their discoveries. This well-kept secret fell with the House of Turunak a millennia ago during the Sundering of the Mountain. Only recently were ruins of these facilities and ancient libraries found telling whispers of these long-forgotten technologies.

Many scholars and historians hope to emulate the Steamwork technology in order to preserve its ancient traditions. Automated functions would also prove very lucrative to business in major cities, making it a potentially lucrative field of study. Though only a handful of books exist to help these researchers solve the puzzle.

Primarily Steamworking was used to automate moving objects from place to place. But there were also Steamworks used in smelting and smithing. Using hammers to hit harder than an apprentice Dwarf may be able to, or in some outlying cases, used as a defense mechanism. Some archaeologists have recounted seeing traps sprung and deadly Steamwork weapons used to thwart trespassers.
