Borea is a frost planet constantly covered in a chemical snow. Most people cannot live here, the chemicals burning the skin, and the far below freezing temperatures killing most. While the surface is rather inhospitable, the underground is heated by a strange planetary core, so many live underground. Some do live on the surface however,
Frostkin, large heavyset hunters, and
Merdhrai, otter people with dark hair.
Position in Space
Borea is the furthest planet from Aldyn's sun, the eighth, just following the gas giant
Juno, and has quite easily the lowest temperatures on any planet in the system. It regularly reaches -150 degrees Celcius (I didn't want to make a new temperature unit...), which though incredibly cold, is quite a bit warmer than expected from that location in the system. This is in part because the temperature of the planet heavily increases underground from a superheated core. While the surface is -150 C, the upper atmosphere can be much colder, and under the surface it can be much warmer depending on geothermics.
A Giant Ball of Ice
Borea is one of the larger planets in the system, yet has a much lower population than any of the hospitable planets. Borea's intense conditions make life far too difficult for expenses to be worth it to do anything on the surface: most technology barely works from the cold.
Living in the Wasteland
Borea is certainly a wasteland planet. Much of the planet is year round covered in snow, days are incredibly long, and the entire planet has very minimal elevation change, with only a small handful of real mountains. Terrible blizzards and storms are not common, but travel very quickly across the planet's surface and can be very dangerous. The planet does have surface water from the snow, but the chemicals in the atmosphere make it drinkable but poisonous to non-residents.
The people of Borea find ways to live however. Some races evolved to become more used to the temperature and live among the surface or near surface, like the
Frostkin and
Merdhrai, the most visible sentient races of the planet (though still rare). Other races, which are almost entirely unknown to most Aldyn travelers, live far below the surface, where the temperature is much more moderate, days are easily culture defined, and geothermal heat and chemical reactions makes water far more drinkable.
