Axion
the Arena of the Divide
Axion is the name of an ancient circular structure that stands as the center of Axia Valley in western Slavyum, on the major continent of Ethae. It is also the name of the nearby farming village. The Axion structure has had many uses, by many cultures over the ages, and has been built and expanded throughout its history. Today only the stonework remains. A shadow of what it once was, with as many mysteries around it as ages it has existed.
Axion's central stones date to the prehistoric periods, believed to be sometime after the Gilgurth impacts, as there are carvings in the stone that depict what could be that event. By the Valmon a tower had been built on the site, using the original stones as a foundation. Though gone, contemporary records suggest it was used for rituals and built to track seasonal changes in the region. The Republic of Lakorth converted it into a watchtower, expanding the site and building a circular castle around the tower. This Lakortha tower and castle-maintained peace and control in the region. This castle was expanded outward through the Lakorthian Age until the decline the Republic, after which it fell out of use. By the rise of the United Kingdoms of Novyum, the castle had fallen into disrepair, having crumbled away with time, its stones hauled away for other uses.
Today it stands abandoned, but stable. The locals have a respect for the site and its last. There are as many tales of the structure as there are people in the nearby town. The most popular tales are those of hidden underground tunnels built by the Lakortha or some other ancient people. This brings the occasional adventurer to the region. All of which find nothing, but spend good coin, so the rumors persist.
For the reputation of Axia Valley being the 'Plains of Eternal War' and cursed, there are no records of the Axion structure ever being attack or damaged through fighting. Among the many tales of Axion, A local legend claims while their lands are cursed the ruins are not. The Axa believe that they will be protected withing the walls of the ruins from invading armies, raiders, monsters, or any threat that comes to their doorstep. This legend has yet to be put to the test.
