Order of the Silent Vigil

Silent Protectors

The Order of the Silent Vigil is one of the five sacred orders of The Church of the Devout Orders and one of the two dedicated to the service of the Daughter. This sworn sisterhood is tasked with guarding the Remains of the Daughter, a fallen demigod. According to Devout Scripture, the Daughter—the eldest of the Elderborn—sacrificed herself atop the Peak of the World, bestowing her power upon Darien, King of the Free Peoples. With her divine strength, Darien waged war against the Elderborn, driving them from Midwin and chasing them beyond the sea.   In addition to safeguarding the Remains of the Daughter, the Order of the Silent Vigil also protects ancient artifacts and sacred scriptures of the Church of the Devout. These relics, believed to contain divine wisdom and power, are kept under constant watch within the order’s sanctuaries, ensuring that they do not fall into the hands of heretics or those who would misuse them.   Members of the Order, known as Battle Angels, are elite warriors. Clad in intricate, gilded armor and masked with emotionless visages—said to mirror the face of The Daughter—they seem more like divine constructs than mortal beings. Their mere presence unsettles both allies and enemies alike. They do not speak. They do not remove their masks. Their numbers remain a secret known only to the Hand of the Father. From childhood, they are forged into living weapons, trained ceaselessly in combat and prayer until all identity is stripped away. Originally, Battle Angels served only to protect the Sanctum of the Silent Vigil, perched atop the Peak of the World in Midwin. But over time, their duty expanded to guarding high-ranking officials of the Church of the Devout. Once assigned, they remain unwavering until death or reassignment. Legends claim they are immortal—never aging, never faltering. The faithful see this as divine truth, while skeptics whisper of dark magic unnaturally prolonging their lives.   Their silence and secrecy breed unease, giving rise to endless rumors. Some doubt they guard the Remains of the Daughter at all, instead believing they protect a terrible secret—one so profound that, if revealed, it could unravel the very fabric of reality.

Becoming an Angel

To be a Battle Angel is to have never known oneself. Many newborns, abandoned at the steps of Devout Churches by desperate mothers, are taken in by the faith—some raised in orphanages, others inducted into the clergy. But a rare and fated few are chosen for something greater. These daughters are taken to the Peak of the World in the heart of the Vydern Mountain Range, on the continent of Midwin. There, they are delivered to the Sanctum of the Silent Vigil—the hallowed site where The Daughter is said to have been laid to rest. The Sanctum is made of Albaite, a testament to its age.   To be raised as an Angel is to be stripped of name, face, and identity. From the moment they arrive, they are veiled, their features never again to be seen by mortal eyes. They are forbidden to speak, save in prayer. Their training begins before their sixth year, though little is known of the brutal trials they endure. It is whispered that those who falter vanish, their fates unknown, their failures unspoken.   The final initiation is both sacred and harrowing. Each initiate must recite The Protector’s Prayer, a hymn so long and intricate that few outside the Sanctum have ever heard it in full. Only upon its completion may they take the Silent Vow—a vow sealed by the ritual removal of their tongue.
