Maddoks (Mad-eh-ks)

The Maddoks are a transient class of Heno who often build their settlements on old battlefields, and are almost exclusively found in the South and Midlands of Albanos.

They are thought to have originally been a mixture of a peasant class who could not survive off of subsistence farming, and those who simply decided to live off the grid, separating from their tribes. Outsiders see them as remnants of the Hanoez Empire, the ghosts of those Lodonesia conquered.

The first record of the term Maddoks comes in the list of first Koaneg Eskern participants, listing several vassals and attendants as their tribal affiliation. They are often recorded hovering in small groups by imminent battles or sieges, waiting to finish off the wounded when the armies break or retreat. They will also often intercept battle plans and raid camps.

Because they live off of what they find at battlefields, human remains are often part of their cultural artifacts and diet. They are the only tribe which practices cannibalism as a food source consistently. It is thought that the practice of Sin-Eating was adapted by the superstitious Belenakos from their interactions with the Maddoks, spreading to other Belh-worshiping tribes up North in later centuries.

They often pop up as merchants in less regulated areas, selling scavenged armor and battle regalia, and the lower classes often selling war stories for food or shelter. They are also excellent berserker warriors and often outcastes if unhappy with their life, will run away and become a sword for hire.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Despite seeming loosely organized, there is a caste system in place, much like other wasteland tribes such as the Myacoris. It consists of the following:
  • Highest Caste: Researchers, inventors, archaeologists, anyone involved in information revival
  • Ruler Caste: Tribe/family elders, architects, musicians, other artisans
  • Labor Caste: Foragers, small game hunters, insect and animal rearing
  • Outcastes: Infantry/skirmishers, scouts, assassins
Despite this Maddokes seem to be fiercely loyal to one another and are very warlike. All members of the tribe are required to undergo combat training, which is why those who make combat their sole profession are considered so low on the social ladder.
