Arkturis Republic

Overview

The Arkturis Republic is a unique and highly structured political entity founded in the wake of a civil war known as the War of Divergence. Established in 3400 BF after the assassination of the Emperor of the Nathas Empire and a philosophical split between the Church and the State, the Arkturis Republic broke away from the Nathas Empire to form its own system of governance. The Republic is distinctive for its Triumvirate system, wherein three leaders share equal power, each overseeing a different branch of the government. This division of power results in a decentralized governance system, with each branch of leadership centered in one of the three major cities of the Republic.

The War of Divergence was a civil war that began in 3400 BF following the assassination of the Emperor of the Nathas Empire and a growing philosophical rift between the Empire’s church and the government. The war began when the Court of Grand Dukes assassinated the Emperor, leading to a division within the Council of War over the role of religion in governance.

The faction that would go on to form the Arkturis Republic disagreed with the influence that the Church of Ifrit had over the governmental policies of the Nathas Empire. They wanted to create a more secular system of government that focused on the balance of power, and they felt the military, executive, and economic branches of governance should be separate but work together to maintain a stable and prosperous nation. This philosophy gave birth to the Triumvirate system.

After the war ended, the victorious faction established the Arkturis Republic as a new political entity, separate from the Nathas Empire. They created a system that ensured military power, executive leadership, and economic control would be divided among three distinct offices, each with its own responsibilities but operating in harmony.

The Triumvirate

At the heart of the Arkturis Republic is the Triumvirate, a political system where three leaders govern the nation, each responsible for one specific branch of the government. The Triumvirate is designed to balance power among the military, executive, and economic sectors, ensuring that no one faction can dominate the others. This separation of power provides a form of checks and balances, as the three branches often work together but are also in competition to ensure that the Republic runs smoothly.

The High Marshal: The military leader of the Republic, the High Marshal holds supreme authority over the Arkturis military and is responsible for the defense and security of the Republic. The High Marshal’s office is based in the capital city of Wyrmstead, a strategic location near the borders of the Besidar Forest and the Nathas Empire. Wyrmstead is a fortress city known for its fortifications, and it serves as the heart of military operations in the Republic. The High Marshal is responsible for military planning, oversight of the army, and directing any military campaigns. Their power extends not only to the army but also to the military police, ensuring the Republic maintains internal order through force if necessary.

The High King: The executive and bureaucratic leader, the High King oversees the day-to-day administration of the Republic. Based in Aethelheim, the city known as the seat of governmental authority, the High King’s role involves executive decision-making, policy creation, and the administration of laws. The High King manages the bureaucratic functions of the Republic, such as taxation, foreign diplomacy, and overseeing the civic infrastructure. While the High Marshal oversees military matters and the High Merchant manages the economy, the High King coordinates the broader interactions between these spheres, ensuring the smooth operation of the Republic’s governance.

The High Merchant: The High Merchant is the leader in charge of the economic affairs of the Republic. Based in Ealdorburg, a city that thrives on commerce, trade, and financial activity, the High Merchant manages the nation’s resources, trade routes, and marketplaces. They regulate internal and external trade, oversee resource extraction, and work to maintain a stable economic environment for the people of Arkturis. They also have the responsibility of managing the Republic’s treasury, ensuring that the nation's finances are in order, and forging trade agreements with neighboring nations. The High Merchant also plays an important role in foreign relations when it comes to economic diplomacy, managing tariffs, trade routes, and foreign investments.
