The Vintner's Dream

Amongst the commoner's of Duble, the city-state that lies on the western side of the Armoury mountains in Bastique, there is a tradition. When all children reach the age of 15 and are able to begin working in earnest, they and their village will travel to the Champs de Violet region of the continent. This region is known for its many vineyards and the superb wine that they produce and export all over the world.   It is here that the child is to undertake The Vintner's Dream. It is a tradition that is closely guarded amongst the commoners, and while the Dublean nobility is aware of it, they are not completely sure of what it entails. The reason for this is that the commoners see it as a minor victory against the nobles that look down on them. As such, despite the sinister way in which many speak of the ritual, it is in fact a party.   Planned months in advance, all nearby villages will send a message to the vineyards of Champs de Violet to inform them of how many children will be coming of age that year and the names of those children. Once those messages have been received, the commoners of Champs de Violet will begin preparing for their arrival, cooking vast quantities of food and preparing the wine to serve their oncoming guests.   Upon arriving at the vineyards, the child or children about to become of age are met with banners and music and dancing. This is often a shock to the system of the young men and women in attendance as they did not know what to expect. Adults mingle amongst others who they have not seen in some time, while others immediately begin to partake in the banquet, scoffing down the food that is readily available. This is when the young adults are given their first cup of wine.   As the night progresses, the soon-to-be adults are given more and more alcohol, pressured into drinking by the adults and not wanting to lose face when they are on the verge of joining their ranks. To encourage this, drinking games are held that further push the young attendees to drink more and more. These drinking games can consist of drinking competitions where the loser is the last to finish a large tankard of wine, or simply childhood games that they know well that now involve forfeits that force them to partake in the violaceous nectar.   By the end of the night all of the children, and some adults, have drunk themselves into a blacked-out stupor. Once they awake, with the glare of the sun in their eyes and the noise of adults going about their day, cleaning up the mess made the night before, the new adults are welcomed into their new lives and responsibilities by a splitting headache. Their parents and others from their village greet them with a hearty cheer and a great deal of mocking as they ask them how they liked their Vintner's Dream.   The purpose of this rite is not only to celebrate the coming of age of the young adults in their midst, but to also teach them to be responsible, not just with alcohol, but with every other aspect of their lives. Soon after they return to their village, the children turned adults will begin their chosen trade and never forget the lessons of The Vintner's Dream, at least until the next one.
