Session 57: To Brimoia
General Summary
The party puts out to sea with Captain Morse aboard the Wavecutter. The ship is a new design, long and sleek and built for speed. It is armed with a small retinue of Varasudan cannons. It crewed by a combination of Lannish and Varasudan sailors. Communication is an issue at first, but Vayetse manages to rig up a translation field in the mess. It only covers a few square feet, but it allows for planning and conversation among the crew.
About three days out from Wallensk, the ship passes through the area formerly known as the Winds of Marros. The storms have decreased significantly - while the winds are still unusually strong, they are nothing like the prior crossings.
The trip passes without any major incidents. Other than some cultural difference between the crewmates - which are quickly smoothed over - and a minor case of heatstroke, the days are peaceful and quiet. Near the end of the journey, Artyom spots three shooting star just before dawn, which one of the older Lannish sailors say is an omen that their hearts' desires will come true.
Midway through the fourth week at sea, the lookout spots land. As the Wavecutter heads towards the inlet where the Bronze Tower supposedly sits, the crew spots two strange ships moored near the coast. The ships are short but wide, and both armed and armored. On closer inspection, the ships are crewed by dwarves and are not flying the flag of the Holy Illuminated Exeter Empire. Captain Morse suggests moving closer to parley, which Artyom supports. The Wavecutter approaches to hailing distance. The captain of the lead dwarven ship, who introduces himself as Gisli, asks what business the explorers have with the Dowsing Fleet. Myles - who speaks dwarven - responds that they seek passage into the bay and eventually inland. The dwarves suggest that the newcomers won't get far without a guide and invites them to parley.
Both ships send out small boats to meet on open water. Captain Gisli explains that it would be dangerous to proceed further because the bay is full of sunken ruins that can rip the hull of an unprotected ship. When Artyom states that they only need to get to safe landing to look for some ruins, Captain Gisli suggests that they head for the port town of Breagas to speak with the Council of Elders rather than roaming around Brimoia without permission. Artyom also mentions that Wal and Varasuda are looking for allies to fight the Ones Below. Captain Gisli responds that between the tensions with the fey and the ongoing war with the serpent-folk, there isn't much Brimoia can do to help at the moment, but at least they haven't been attacked by aberrations yet. As the party moves on, Captain Gisli gives them a final warning - don't put in port at Ahngrin, because that's a fey stronghold.
That evening, the Wavecutter passes a small port that must be Ahngrin. Over Eleanor and Xiamhara's protests, the party decides to keep going to Breagas. Two days later, in the midafternoon, the party sees the town of Breagas ahead. Another armored warship sits in the harbor, surrounded by smaller vessels. A large shipyard dominates the waterfront, surrounded by smaller stone buildings. Most of the inhabitants appear to be dwarves. As the Wavecutter docks and the party disembarks, they are greeted by a pair of dwarves in formal clothes, a human in worker's gear, and a handful of dwarven guards...
