Orders of Bloodhunters

There are individuals in the World who are unable to forgive the wrongs done to them. Some are wronged by other mortals, and become consumed with revenge. Others feel wronged by the world, or society, and seek out gangs, sects or cults that validate their sense of injustice. But there are some who lose too much to monsters, fiends or dark magic to ever move on from the loss, and these - if they survive their initial impulse to strike out at things more powerful than them - are the people who gravitate to the like-minded orders that are called hunters, slayers, purifiers and other names, and who know themselves as bloodhunters.   Arguably a kind of minor spellcaster, these hunters are marked out by the use of a peculiar form of folk magic, fueled by blood and anger, shaped into blasting and blinding curses. There is something intrinsically self-destructive about this magic, and the orders exist in no small part to guide those who tap into this source of power, so that they can wield it against their foes, instead of turning it against themselves.   The largest such orders were founded in Talahaea from a coalition of renegades from the Regime, the Legion and the Cathlaean tribes, during the 3ʳᵈ legion-Regime War. These groups began by taking in those scarred by the horrors of that war and the monstrosities it unleashed. Combining orcish alchemy and northern druidic lore with stolen Virin-yal pharmacology, they created the Hunter's Bane, a powerful, psychoactive and transformative elixir, which used together with intensive training allowed the vengeful to harness their power to a purpose.   Caino lacks an insular tradition of such hunters, but a cadet branch of the Talahaean orders was established shortly before the Uprising. Sato, meanwhile, has its own tradition. Born in the sands of the Empty Quarter, its focus is on rooting out ancient horrors, and its members use techniques and tools reclaimed - they say - from lost Gond. This includes a preparation of desert plants similar to the Bane, which some claim the Talahaeans stole from them.   Depending on the law of the land, the orders may be considered noble, self-sacrificing heroes, a necessary evil, or a dangerous cult. Many are happy to see them when monsters stalk the night, but once their business is done they are about as welcome as their quarry was. While individual hunters may resent this, the orders as a whole have long since accepted that this is the sacrifice they make, and that they are the sanctuary that their members need.   The northern bloodhunters are united under the name the Order of the Forbidden, while those in the south and in Caino belong to the Orders of Purity. Suto's hunters are known as the Knights of Gond, after the ancient Empire that ruled Sutan.
