Fae Beasts
In addition to regular Woldbeasts, faewold's are home to exceptionally intelligent animals called, collectively, Fae beasts.
Troth beasts are large and intelligent animals with a strong drive to form a partnership bond with a mortal. While they usually cannot speak, troth beasts are able to communicate telepathically with the mortal they bond with, making them excellent hunting and fighting partners. All of the troth beasts in a given wold will have a distinctive colouration or patterning. The most common troth beasts are horses, hounds and hawks. In some wolds, large troth cats are more common then hounds. If a wild contains troth beasts, the ruling Archfae and their high fae will invariably keep a number of such animals, although mortals struggle to sustain more than a handful of troth bonds.
Blink dogs are a common faewold predator. They hunt in packs and have the unusual ability to travel between worlds, in addition to their signature 'blink.' The dogs are able to perform a short-range teleport, which they use to harry and confuse prey or rival hunters. While they cannot form a telepathic bond with a mortal partner, they are extremely loyal to those who win their trust. Intelligent enough to understand language and skilled trackers, a blink dog can track an absent partner across a continent. They also have a strong concept of reciprocity, and in particular will often attach themselves to an individual who has aided them in a time of danger, even to the extent of leaving their pack to discharge their obligation.
Hexebeasts are animals with above-average intelligence and distinct magical abilities. Some have a capacity to channel elemental energies, to slip from one shadow to another, or to disrupt Magic. Technically, blink dogs would be considered hexebeasts, but due to their wide spread, they are considered their own thing. Other hexebeasts of note include melissae - highly-organised, intelligent bees - scare crows, crag cats, tressym and perytons.
Hexebeasts of a more sinister kind, usually found in words which connect to the Grim Plan, are known as Shadowbeasts. Examples of this type include gremiska, yeth hounds, and displacer beasts. While not automatically hostile, shadow beasts tend to be vicious.
Finally, Sage beasts like high owls, grincats, giant lynx and sagefish are gifted with great intelligence and wisdom, and are known for offering advice to those who seek them out, within limits. Some demand to be caught and released for three answers, others simply charge in meals. Although wise and generally benevolent, sage beasts are known for their arrogance, and a tendency to be cryptic.
