Draconic Territories and Lairs

Dragons were created to protect the World in various ways, but their most fundamental role is to affix the realm of Existence to the harmonious ebb and flow of dzenmisa. They do this using the complex rituals of lair creation, which can reshape the landscape, weather and, in extreme cases, even the physical laws for miles around.   While it begins as a mere physical space, a dragon's lair develops into a pin, transcending the planar divisions to connect the Innermost Realms to a higher truth. A lair changes the world, and also creates a fountain of dzenmisa which sustains the dragon, for only very young drakes have any need or practical ability to consume material food (which is not the same as having no appetite for it.) The lair also houses the Hoard.   The older the dragon grows, the more and larger the lairs that e commands, and the greater and more dragonish its territory. They guard this territory well, for it is not only the source of their own life, but has the potential - if a lair is seized by fiends, undead or Colossi - to disastrously corrupt the entire region.   In modern times, the number of dragons is not great. Many were killed during The Cataclysm of Ladon, and they were never numerous. Others have been slain by hunters seeking to harvest their parts, or to destroy time, or acting in service of the Colossi to destroy or corrupt their lairs.   It is often noted by scholars that the effect of a dragon's lair is always to create a more extreme environment, leading to speculation about the conditions on primeval Aiaos. Whether this tendency speaks of the true condition of the World - the first civilisation of Aious was, after all, sky borne - or not, extreme conditions are a key diagnostic of draconic presence.   As a side effect of their nature, dragon's lairs are planar 'soft places,' where travel between the planes is easier. In particular, the dzenmistic 'pin' traverses The Firmament, providing a route to the upper planes despite the Web of Fate. The greatest lairs have a marked presence in the celestial planescape, either as a shard realm or a feature of the Pattern.
