Tamper
Fennel's second in command of the Grottoneers. Tamper wants to learn everything: the sword and shortbow, a few different magicks, a few different sciences, the essentials of tactics and leadership, but he has trouble finding time for them all. He wants to be the kind of hero that's described in overly optimistic stories, able to see the big picture and sniff out the root of every problem, not just shoot arrows where Fennel tells him.
Tamper may not be a quick study, but he's a diligent one. The more he understands someone's way of thinking, the stronger he feels about them, for better or worse. He heaps expectations on himself, and sometimes on others. He cares deeply about a lot of things, but in an aloof, impersonal way. Tamper may still be figuring out who he is, but his teammates already adore him, and claim that he'll save the world one day.

Compassion, whatever that means
Tamper always assumed that he'd be complete as a person once he became just a little more compassionate. He stopped feeling catharsis when firing his bow, and he took on a tender admiration for all growing things: plants, populations, creatures and the networks which form between them, the evolution of beasts, the history of cities. But he rarely knows people long enough to offer them the same empathy, and he still can't make any friends outside his little team. His shy, self-deprecating demeanor conceals a blistering arrogance, and he opines under his breath on topics he doesn't understand. Over time, he retreats closer to Fennel, the only one who seems able to put up with him.A step in the right direction
As he improves his skill as a ranger, he finds a unique new pet. He names it Gallant Silichonne and trains it to become one of the crew. Even to those who hated him before, Tamper seems like a totally different person around his beloved bird.
