"Where, indeed, does one even dare to begin when attempting to chart the vastness of this world—and the realms that stretch beyond? I have posed this very question to myself no fewer than a thousand times, each inquiry more maddening than the last, as I embarked on this most perilous of undertakings. Perhaps, I mused, it would be wisest to begin with the very thing that robs me of sleep in the deep hours of night: the vast, ineffable unknown that surrounds us all. For truly, what do we understand? Precious little, I assure you. Scandalously little of Netherdyn's living, breathing core, of the forsaken Grace of the Divine Parents above us, and—oh, most particularly!—of the Sea of Night, that cold, unforgiving abyss that encloses our fragile existence. Yet... there are threads. Yes, threads of knowledge—tenuous though they may be—that one might grasp and follow, should one have the nerve. It is within these slender, fleeting glimpses of understanding that I find some measure of purpose for this Compendium, this humble repository of shattered truths. Thus, it is to cosmology—both within and without—that I devote the first volume of this work."
