Ferol Sal Character in Aetregyr | World Anvil

Ferol Sal

Ferol Sal is the abbot of Far Abbey, also known as the Monastery at the End of the World. He is a enigmatic figure, a man who keeps things close to his chest, yet invites the most hardest, debased criminals into his order in hopes of rehabilitating them. His methods generally seem to work, as most of his order are centered, calm, and obedient. However, the fact that he has an entire wing full of parishioners who must be locked up for their own good, lest they harm themselves or others, speaks to his failures, but also to his genuine efforts to heal all those who ask for comfort.   When Ferol Sal was approached by the adventuring party known as Hubear's Companions, he appeared welcoming and gracious. He offered them shelter from the cold, a place to sleep, and a warm meal. When asked about a winter wolf nearby, Ferol Sal concealed the truth, because he was ashamed and afraid of the monastery's role in putting Hrothag on his path of vengeance and murder. In truth, Sal knew all about Hrothag because Hrothag had once been an initiate at the Abbey. Despite all attempts to cleanse him of wickedness and sin, Hrothag only grew more hateful during his time with the monks, and in time fell to the madness inflicted by his lycanthropy. Sal made every effort to conceal this information from outsiders.   Despite Sal's best efforts, the Companions, led to Hrothag's Diary by a disturbed individual named Mylos, were able to piece together the events that the abbot was attempting to conceal. In a final moment of contrition, Sal admitted that monks were being taken from the grounds around the monastery, and asked the adventurers for help. The most recent victim was a young initiate named Meyani Telossi. Fortunately, the party was able to locate Hrothag's Lair and destroy him, procure an antidote to the disease he was spreading (called The Frigid Woe) and rescue Telossi. Sal offered his sincere thanks to the adventurers upon their return.   The Abbot is not a malicious individual, for he truly believes in his his heart that love is an expression of calmness of spirit, and is a natural state for men who only need to cool the fires that burn within. Yet his evasiveness and shame is his greatest sin, and it was nearly a very fatal flaw for many innocent people.

Ferol Sal is the hyper-protective, over-zealous leader of the Monks of the Frozen Blood. While not malicious in spirit, Sal's unwillingness to accept responsibilities for his failures put the monastery at risk when one of his own, Hrothgar the Packlord, went mad and ran amok in the area of the Thinveil where his monks reside. Sal believes that every man has a peaceful spirit inside him, even the most troubled and violent offenders, and his order is dedicated to cooling the emotions of those whose blood runs hot.
