Planewardens Organization in Aerune | World Anvil

Planewardens

Planewardens are best described as the militia of Molthuth with a side of disaster response and search-and-rescue, they are the warriors and mages and druids that stand between the rest of Aerune and the open wounds in the sky that lead to other planes. Their goal is as much to keep mortals away from the rifts as they are to protect the world from extraplanar incursions.   Every plane-touched tiefling of Molthuth is a defacto member of the Planewardens, but the name properly refers to those who take up arms and spells to preserve the distinction between the material realm and the elemental planes that are close enough to touch. An adult willingly taking on the mantle of planewarden is rewarded with the The Feast of Initiation.   Each settlement of Molthuth, no matter its size, has a group of dedicated planewardens who are authorized to act autonomously when needed. The leader of the planewardens is in Zalma, but senior planewardens in every location communicate with each other in a network of shared advice, resources, and back-up. Much of the non-planar-defense magic performed on Molthuth is to facilitate this instantaneous communication, which in turn preserves lives when an unexpected disaster strikes from the sky (or, very rarely, from the coast).   The life of a planewarden is one of extremes. Observation of the sky and the planes accessible at any given moment is constant, and most wardens live in a state of moderate hypervigilance--but most of their days are simple and full of the hard work of simply surviving an inhospitable place capable of shifting between gale-force winds, blizzards, and lightning-riddled downpours in a matter of hours.   The most exclusive faction of the planewardens are the Skyguard, which people enjoy calling the "highest rank" as a pun. However, not all senior wardens are skyguard--plenty of tieflings are devastatingly effective from the ground. Mages are particularly adept at long-range "situation management" and do not need to be aloft on physical wings, and druids can have their own wings whenever they need them.
