Material Gathering
Materials to Fuel all of Your Crafting Needs
Introduction
As you journey through vast plains and rugged mountains you may find that you have an insatiable itch to gather various resources. This rule set is here to help with that exact purpose. The following rules will lay out the methods to find, gather, and evaluate the materials that you will find during the game.Gathering Mechanics
Materials are the most basic block for any item, potion, weapon, or armor that you can craft. Collecting these materials is an important task that will keep you well stocked in items and keep your gear top notch. This section will describe the ways that you can collect materials.Random Gathering
Random gathering is the primary method of collecting materials while traveling or delving through dungeons. You may take the random gathering action whenever you enter a space on the overworld map for the first time in a day, discover a new room in a dungeon, or while taking a short or long rest. While moving through the overworld you may collect two items per hex while moving at full speed, four items per hex if moving at half speed, and one item per hex if moving at double speed. Using a vehicle does not affect your ability to collect materials. During short rests you may collect one item while during long rests you may collect three items while keeping the benefits of the long rest. If the region you travel through or the area you discover has access to water, you may go fishing instead of gathering materials from that area.Targeted Gathering
Targeted gathering is the method intended for players who are looking for specific materials for their crafting. If you are looking for a specific material, you may roll on the Targeted Gathering Table and receive a material with a quality based on the roll. You may only target materials if you have obtained them through other means previously. If the item is not available in the region, the roll automatically fails. Roll d20Carving & Looting
What better reward from a hunt is there than carving up your prize? Looting and carving involves collecting materials off creatures you have defeated in combat or stolen from. You may carve a material off a creature after defeating it in combat by declaring what part of the creature you want to harvest then rolling an applicable skill check. The Dungeon Master will determine the skill check and the DC for the material you harvest. Materials can also be found in loot pools after defeating creatures, stealing from them, or just by searching random containers. Yes, even including the trash.Regions
The map is divided into several regions, or biomes, in which only certain materials can be found. For example, when looking for plant-based materials in a desert you may come across cloth, cork, roots, seeds, or thorns. A chart of materials for each biome is available only to the Dungeon Masters. The material quality in each region is balanced based on how difficult it is to traverse it.Types of Materials
Materials are organized into three categories: red, green, and blue. Red materials are those that must be mined or quarried from the ground such as stone, iron, or gold. Gathering these resources requires a bludgeoning weapon or metallurgy tools. Unlike green or blue materials, red materials have a set quality. Each material's quality can be seen in the Red Materials table below. Steel, bronze, glass, and ceramic are not collected like the other materials, they must be crafted separately to gain their benefits. See the table below for more information on crafted materials.Green materials are those that can be obtained from plants and plant matter such as leaves, vines, or sap. Green materials require that a player has a slashing weapon or potioner's kit in their inventory.
Blue materials can be obtained from animals. These materials may include hide, teeth, or venom. Blue materials require that a player has a piercing weapon or craftsman's tools in their inventory.
If you don’t have the proper equipment to gather material type, then the quality of the material you gather will automatically be -3.
