Introduction
Though many of Aekko's denizens walk along the land, under the surface of the unsuspecting waters are full of diverse life both mundane and serene. Even to entirely land-locked countries like
Ezlekh and
Vomethnda, fish prove a valuable resource for their parts, a reliable food supply, and sometimes the gateway to new technological breakthroughs. Below is a description of how fishing works in the world of Aekko, where it can be done, what resources it requires, and the many applications of the fish which you catch.
Mechanics
To begin fishing, one must craft either a fishing rod by combining any two materials or with a
net. Fishing is an action which can be taken during a short rest or long rest as long as a body of water is present nearby. It can also take the place of a
Material Gathering check, or it can be used in the place of one's crafting time during a rest.
Skill Check
After casting your line and spending at least an hour waiting, you will feel a tug on your line. To determine the fish which ends up on the end of your line, you roll a Fishing Roll. This is done by rolling a d100 and referring to the corresponding table at the bottom of the page to learn what you have caught and its rarity.
Bait
Ancient peoples across Aekko, after thousands of years of roaming the lands, discovered that its fish life would be much easier to catch with a bit of coercion, hence the art of baiting was born. By placing a material on the end of one's line, they are much more easily able to catch more temperamental fish. Below are the following boosts which one receives to their Fishing Roll upon spending an item as bait:
- If a -3 to -1 material is used as bait: Increase your Fishing Check by: 1d10+10
- If a +0 to +1 material is used as bait: Increase your Fishing Check by: 20
- If a +2 to +3 material is used as bait: Increase your Fishing Check by: 20, and gain advantage with the check
Catching & Cooking Fish
Congrats, you caught a fish! Now that you have landed a catch, you have a limited amount of time to decide what to do with your catch before it spoils! You have up to 3 days to either harvest a random blue resource from the fish or cook the fish. Eating cooked fish provides the consumer with an effect, with that effect ranging from temporarily bolstering one's stats to emitting magical auras dependent on the breed of the fish. At the bottom of the page is a list of fish you can catch and their corresponding effects upon being cooked and eaten.
Pastel Pollocks & Sharks
These two types of fish, along with Aekko's Fruitbarbs can temporarily embolden one's stats. The pollocks and sharks are unique, however, in that they can be shared amongst a party's members and their buffs can be split among those party members. That means that one could either eat a Bull Shark on their own to gain +3 to strength for the duration, or three of that party's members could share the Bull Shark and each gain a +1 to strength for the duration.
Special Fish
Across Aekko's many diverse landscapes live an even more-diverse wider of fish species which call them home. Sometimes, one may even find a particular fish native to only that region. These
special fish are often specifically adapted to one region or biomes across Aekko. While they are rare to encounter, they provide great unique buffs for whoever cooks them. Unlike the cooking benefits of more well-known fish,
Special Fish's cooked qualities will only reveal themselves after they are cooked.
