Curator's Note: though it cannot be seen on this transcription, the original ledger's abrupt ending is followed by a series of long, jagged lines and specs of blood. Below this is more writing in a dramatically different hand. It reads as follows:   "I do not know to whom this message goes, but hear me and tremble. It is by the Maker's hand that you suffer this loss. Your subordinates desecrated the sacred road with their treachery, and such treachery was returned to them a dozen times over. Such is the fate of those who defy the Watcher of Ways. Heed this warning, or suffer the price."
— Reclaimed Snatcher Ledger #473
Followers of Tiln, The Maker tend to be an eccentric, artistic lot. Many of her followers travel from place to place selling well crafted wares or offering protection or justice to underprivelaged members of whatever society they happen to be passing through. Other followers of Tiln are more simple merchants who simply call on Tiln to assist them in the delivery and protection of their goods. Still others build outposts in dangerous or wild lands in order to ease the burdens of travel for others.   Currently, Tiln's believers largely lack an organized structure as they are scattered throughout the world. In addition, since the Goblins took over Chedonc (including the effective headquarters of their faith) in 3801 (10 years before Total Eclipse) the followers of Tiln have lost influence to the point of being nearly unheard of outside of superstitious caravaneers. Still, some small border towns are occasionally blessed by a visiting Tilnian cleric or paladin who will often stay long enough to overthrow a corrupt sheriff or weaken a nearby monster hive.

Clerical Tenets

In the living fires of the Great Smith we are born.
On the anvil of perseverence we are forged anew.
By the quenching of knowledge and wisdom we are made whole.
For the forging of others we are given flame.
Through the strengthening of others we are given strength.
At the traveler's fire all are equal.

Clergy

Wanderers
The primary class of clergy in The Wandering, Wanderers roam the lands and provide assistance to travelers they meet. They are known to upkeep roads, kill bandits and snatchers, repair broken wagons, and rescue those who need rescuing.
Outposts
Outposts are responsible for the maintenance of a Tilnian shrine and all of the roads near it. They also provide resupply points for Wanderers and function as backup that Wanderers can call upon should the need arise.

Burial Rites

When possible, followers of the Wandering become one once again with the flames of the Great Smith's forge to prepare them for their journey down the river of death. Their remains forged with metals into ingots that are then used to create small statues in the likeness of the deceased.   While traveling, the corpse is burned atop a pyre and an ingot of steel placed atop the body, and the remains scattered or buried alongside the road.

Notable Ceremonies and Holidays

Because priests of Tiln are usually on the road, their celebrations are generally short and simple. This does not diminish the joy with which they celebrate, however. Many adherents find these short celebrations much more emotionally intimate than the large events of other religions.
  • Marriage: marriage is seen by priests of the Wandering as a journey undertaken together by husband and wife. Both participants bury their feet beneath a crossroads during a brief ceremony during which the priest ties the husband's left ankle to the wife's right. If they are in a safe area, they keep their ankles tied for three days to complete the bond. If they are on the road or in areas where combat might be necessary, then the rope is cut and the two halves worn as ankle bracelets for the duration. Most couples keep rope around their ankle for the rest of their life as a sign of commitment, and many embelish the rope with matching decorations marking their joint accomplishments.
  • The Thing: though very rare, The Thing is an event in which all clergy of The Wandering are called together for a council. Nobody knows exactly how they all know to be in the right place at the right time, but it usually fortells the coming of an event of great importance.
