Magic staff

In Adynía, a magic staff is the only way people can use magic from afar and, since the energy is stored in the crystal on its tip, provides a way to use magic without wasting ones own reserves. While relatively common, they can be dangerous if wielded carelessly, as touching a charged crystal is harmful and even more so if it shatters.
Because of this, the crystal is usually encased in a metal housing or mesh, protected by a sheath or, failing that, covered by thick cloth or leather tied to it when not in use.   Magic staves can be used for a variety of things. Smiths sometimes use them to heat their furnaces quicker, and during festivals it's not uncommon for mages to put on shows where they shoot flames or bolts of light into the air. Some cities employ mages using water magic to put out fires, and many armies have warriors wielding staves against lightly armoured enemies.   These tools were invented independently by paleo- and neolithic cultures in several different regions, as a byproduct of using spears tipped with magic crystals. They remained relatively rare until the rise of the Zameltoníans, an early bronze age society, who were first to construct and use magic staves on large scale in combat, and to craft weapons and arms more efficiently than their enemies.
Today, making magic staves is a whole industry in many countries, centered around academies that often specialize in enchanting weapons and arms, as both require magic crystals.

Raw materials & Components
Magic staves are usually made using wood and metals, with models intended for combat being reinforced and with a variety of housing to keep the crystal safe yet easy to replace in case it shatters. Some staves are also made entirely out of metal, though these tend to be for ceremonial use due to their weight.
No matter what the material is, the crystal must be in direct contact with the shaft so that wielder can use it properly.
