Hammerschfell

A giant floating metropolis full of opportunity and danger. Magic is literally everywhere, but the city is big enough that each major faction has been able to carve out a part for them. There are Elves who live by The Old Way among the trees and there are Elves who have adapted to the city life. All are welcome in Hammerschfell. The city is two layers and a center spire that reaches high enough that none save those who have been to the top have seen it. The city itself is surrounded with a magical energy that crackles and moves wildly around it. It protects things from falling out and unwanted things coming in. Those who have lived in Hammerschfell long enough can bypass the energy field when entering the city, but just like everyone else, you have to go through the port on the "ground level" in a high-security area. Ground level, commonly known among those who live there as "The Trough" is about 4 square miles with a heavily forested area around the perimeter There is a massive palace in the center that stretches up to the "sky level" and beyond. Around that is a tight sprawl of tightly nit buildings that stack up instead of out with strings of magically lit ribbons of cloth. Mixed in with those buildings are merchants, who have distinctive buildings with no doors. Shops are protected magically and with guards depending on the value of what is being guarded. Instead, beaded strings hang in entry ways, often with artwork or spells depicting what wares are inside.   There is another ring of flowing water and two rivers that go to the edge, forming a waterfall. The Elven Forest is a holy site to the forest elves who live there. The Prison is made completely out of rock and there are a few clans of Mountain Dwarves who not only built it, but now protect it and see to its upkeep. Other magical beings have been drawn to Hammerschfell and live among the people on Ground Level. Closer to the outer ring of the city are large castles and keeps. The Adventurer's and Explorer's Guild, among others, have guild halls here.   Sky Level is wild. There are no connecting points to it. One is expected to take oneself to and from it, or pay someone to do it for you. There are contraptions to buy and rent, people perform spells or use items, you can be teleported, flown, etc. There are any number of ways to get to Sky Level, but no official way. Sky level is a series of platforms housing massive sky rises with parks, trees, and merchants. While there is foot traffic, there is a lot more flying on the Sky Level. There is another section of Sky Level that doesn't have sky rises, but instead houses very important and massive castles and keeps. This area is high-security. There is also a palace section with big parks and magical creatures. There are many towers that mostly belong to Universities and Colleges teaching all manner of things. People come far and wide for a Hammerschfell education.

History

Hamm Hammerschfell was exploring further east and north of the Eastern Settlements, which at the time was as far as humans had explored and lived to tell others about it. A freak accident caused the flying craft to plummet to the ground and paralyzed Hamm from the neck down. Undeterred, he invented a way to cast magic freely despite his new condition. He established a kingdom on a flying mass of land and he led the way in inventing a new way to live. The Adventures of Hamm Hammerschfell is a popular book that has been reprinted many times over the years. It tells the story of Hammer "Hamm" Hammerschfell and the adversities he faced, the places he saw, but most of all the treasure he hid. The Hammersch Treasure is the stuff of legends.
