Ice Dragon / Frost Wyrm

Snow Terrors are often at the top of the food chain in the tundra, though larger predators such as Icebeasts or ancient frost dragons may occasionally contest their dominance. The primary competitors to Snow Terrors are other ambush predators, such as the Dire Wyrms or Frostwyrms, which hunt similarly in the frigid terrain.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Frostwyrms are serpentine beasts of tremendous length—often exceeding 40 feet—covered in dense, armor-like scales that shimmer in pale blues and frosted silvers. Unlike true dragons, Frostwyrms lack wings, but their elongated bodies allow them to slither with terrifying speed through snow and ice. Their eyes glow with a cold inner light, and their breath leaves frost etched into the air itself. Bony ridges line their spines, trailing down to barbed tails used for defense.

Ecology and Habitats

Frostwyrms serve as keystone predators, competing with Snow Terrors, Dire Wyrms, and ancient frost dragons for supremacy in the icy wilderness. Their territorial disputes can reshape the migratory paths of entire species. Unlike Snow Terrors, Frostwyrms tend to avoid direct confrontation unless absolutely necessary, relying instead on surprise and lethality.

Behaviour

Frostwyrms are solitary ambush predators that dwell beneath glacial surfaces and in deep snowdrifts. They use their immense strength and ice-magic-infused breath to freeze or trap prey before striking. Though less overtly magical than dragons, they can channel elemental cold through their bite and breath, turning the surrounding terrain into a killing field of rime and mist.

  • Diet: Large herbivores, Frostwolves, Icebeasts, and even other Frostwyrms.
  • Tactics: Known for sudden eruptions from below snowbanks or frozen lakes, Frostwyrms ambush with coiled violence. Their preferred method is to freeze prey in place before devouring them whole or dragging them into a glacial lair.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

  • Feared by the Frost Elves and Icebeast herders, who tell stories of entire caravans vanishing without a trace.
  • In Iceshard Dominion lore, the Frostwyrm is seen as a “herald of deep winter,” believed to appear when the land is most vulnerable.
  • Hunted by the boldest of Frostbound warriors, slaying one is a rite of legend, and its bones are used to craft ceremonial weapons and armor.
