Personal history
Born to Duke Isidor Petra and Princess Syrella Cius in the year 26 B.A., Raelis ranks above his fellow dukes as a member of the royal bloodline. He is a first cousin to the current imperator, Procto Cius.
Like all Petras, Raelis grew up outside Kor Kýmatos, the capital city of Crestos, at Castle Karrahn. Under the tutelage of Magister Lithgin of the Violet College, he received a formal education in governing, economics, and warfare. In adolescence, Duke Isidor's ship became lost at sea during a maelstrom that plagued the southwest Abian coast. After three months of searching for the lost duke, and with no signs of a shipwreck, Arcana ordered Raelis to be prepared for succession to the dukedom. During Isidor's absense, the region was governed by Princess Syrella until Raelis came of age in the summer of 13 B.A. and officially took on his father's duties.
In the year 9 B.A., he became engaged to Flora Lecapena, daughter of Count Archil Lecapena of Castere. In the following spring, in 8 B.A., he became father to Gaelan Petra.
For most of his life, Raelis' governorship of Crestos was peaceful. He had a tranquil home life with his wife and son, enjoyed the support of loyal advisors and knights, and strove to emulate all the noble and good qualities of a proper duke. However, his life changed forever one evening when he received a letter from his father-in-law, Lord Achil. His wife had been away visiting her family in Castere when a slave revolt broke out. Most of the core Lecapena family members had been killed, all save for Lord Archil. Among the dead was Lady Flora, who had been slain trying to protect her sister.
Raelis mourned the death of his beloved wife for nearly a year, either locked away in Castle Karrahn, or going on long hunting excursions in the surrounding forest. But, eventually, Raelis returned to his duties and devoted himself to reforming Crestos' own practices regarding slavery. Though he had no authority to outright abolish it, he did possess the authority to enact new edicts that would prevent mistreatment of slaves and punish masters for abuse. This would mark the beginning of his son Gaelan's own adoption of more liberal political values.
