Sullenfell Fortress
Sullenfell Fortress is a fortress located in the northern sector of Level 1. Situated on an island within a lake, it is connected to the Surface via 6 caged elevators; the fortress serves as a foothold from which expeditions can be sent to all reaches of Level 1 and beyond.
The fortress sits on an island with only two points of access, making it a sound choice for its residents, and those passing by - it is easily defended, and the drawbridges can be pulled up to prevent any movement in or out of the island. This is especially important when large beast hordes pass by the northern sector. The fortress is manned by a permanent garrison along with the many administrative and support staff from Central , and from the Diver's Guild .
There is a full range of facilities and services for all those passing by including open campgrounds (free use for all everyone passing by), warehouses and workshops, dormitories, as well as the guild halls intended for divers (Diving ).
History
Prior to becoming a fortress, the island on which the fortress is now located on served for many years simply as a campground, and later on as an outpost. The earliest group of divers that had descended cleared out portions of the island to make rafts to leave the island. As they were a small number, most of the island was left untouched until the earliest workings of the caged elevators came to be. These divers would venture out from the island to the rest of Level 1 , often with minimal gear, but they would bring back packs full of artifacts and collected samples/speciements. Eventually Central saw a need to expand on the island, and a group of people descended to the island for the purposes of developing it. They cleared up the entire island and set up a walled outpost, as well as building a bridge to allow access (precursor to the smaller bridge on the eastern tip of the island).
It wasn't until the completion of the first caged elevator were they able to properly establish the foundations of what is now Sullenfell Fortress. The design of the fortress drew inspiration from unearthed documents the the Academy had deciphered. These documents pointed to the lost history, prior to the founding of the nation of Abyss. Over the years, the fortress saw upgrades to its fortifications such as the addition of towers, improved gatebridge designs, stationary siege weapons, etc. Internally, the structures within have also undergone significant changes due to technological and magical discoveries by both the Burrow and the Academy.
