Aetherborn

"There's no such thing as rest for me. It's not like I need to. Give or take, I have a couple months, maybe years, left. I'm not going to waste it on somebody like you,"

- Aetherborn Thief, to Elf
Magic is a powerful aspect of life. It flows all over the material plane and beyond, but in certain areas it forms in large bursts. These areas are prime in magical artifacts, monsters, and environments. Some areas though, are where the magic is made manifest, in the form of an Aetherborn. Other terms for the race of pure magic is Manaborn, Arcanakin, as well as simply referring themselves as Aether itself. Unlike certain areas, Aetherborn are made naturally, through the effects of magic on the Material Plane. The Aetherborn on Aitso are cast in a humanoid form, changeable to fit the user of it, but more often than not, staying in a vague, gender-neutral form. Despite being made of raw magic, the Aetherborn are very complex, and varied beings, no two beings being the exact same. Most Aetherborn prefer to use the pronoun 'they' instead of any gendered one, the concept of gender is distant and alien to them, but some of them do adopt it with their forms.
Aetherborn are commonly neutral. They do not possess any tendencies that would be found within beings created by magic, such as divine aspects, elementals, and beings of angelic or demonic origin. The creatures make good use of their short lives, as they are immediately born with a mature mindset and an adult body. Although their alignment often tends to be chaotic, due to the chaos that defines the ideologies of magic within the Material Plane. Appearance-wise, the Aetherborn often cover their entire body, due to the attention it can draw. They don't necessarily have a layer of skin, protecting the raw magic inside of themselves. It is more like a shell, but many appearances of an Aetherborn can be described as having skin. In more harsh climates, it is just a protective barrier for the magic. Swirling patterns have been found on their bodies as well, similar to tattoos of magical origin. Their eyes are often considered to be blank, but some are said to glow brightly. Aetherborn often do not speak to one another. The magical auras emitted off of each and every person is said to be good enough for them, but they partake in common and other languages where it is the dominant language.
Certain Aetherborn have the ability to take the life from other beings to keep themselves, extending their short lifespans for several more years, similar to the affects of Vampirism. This practice can be learnt from one another, and is most commonly found within Aetherborn that lean towards the side of evil. Necromancy Schools and pacts with the undead become very common for Aetherborn who are unable to replicate this ability, in the hopes of prolonging one's life. Other Aetherborn can thrive off of the magical capabilities of many different aspects of the Material Plane. Sorcerers are a prime target, able to be sapped of their magical capabilities, offering years to the mana manifestations. In the same way magic can be dispelled from items through spells, the same can be done by some Aetherborn.

Aetherborn Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice increase by 1.
Age. Aetherborn come into being as adults and live no more than a few years, upwards of two decades, if lucky.
Alignment. Instinctively, due to their short lives, Aetherborn are naturally neutral in terms of good and evil, and tend towards the chaotic alignment due to being mana made into a physical, sentient form. Size. Aetherborn are about the same size as humans, ranging from 5 to 6 feet tall. They are quite light—only about 100 pounds—and their weight diminishes as they age and more and more of their substance becomes pure Mana. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 40 feet.
Darkvision. Accustomed to the night, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light.
Born of Pure Magic. You have resistance to necrotic damage. You also have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Menacing. You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and two other languages of your choice. You can also communicate to other Aetherborn telepathically.
An aetherborn is able to gain the Drain Life ability: a natural attack that deals 1d6 necrotic damage and restores the same number of hit points to the aetherborn. However, if the aetherborn goes for 7 days without dealing this damage, their hit point maximum is reduced by 1d6 per week. This reduction can’t be removed until the aetherborn has used their Drain Life ability and completed a long rest.

These folks are interesting. It's clear you are writing as part of a DM and/or player guide, and I like how you considered aspects of their nature when building the mechanics of the aetherborn, like usually being chaotic and being able to gain the Drain Life ability. I think there's a lot of room for character growth for someone playing (or writing) an aetherborn character, with their very short lifespans. I particularly like their appearance, which has an eerie, unsettling quality that aligns with their nature as well. Love the pictures!
