The Middle Circle
A Hidden World of Light, Crystal, and Craft
The Middle Layer of Hyste Talma lies directly beneath the bustling Outer Layer, but despite its subterranean location, it thrives with a vibrant life of its own. This is where Hyste Talma’s middle-class citizens dwell, dwarves dominate, and craftsmanship flourishes. Though smaller in size, it is the most densely populated and industrious part of the city.
Natural and Magical Illumination
What little natural light reaches the Middle Layer comes through an ingenious system of reflective tunnels and mirrors, sending beams of sunshine cascading down into its depths. However, the real marvel lies in the ever-glowing crystals embedded throughout the city. Fluorescent citrines, garnets, and amethysts, charged with ambient magic, cast a soft glow of yellows, greens, and blues. This illumination creates a mystical, almost dreamlike ambiance that makes navigating the streets a unique experience.
Residential and Cultural Layout
Most of the northern part of the hexagonal Middle Layer consists of residential areas, home to tall, narrow buildings reaching as high as seven stories. The narrow alleys between these structures are just wide enough to allow a single pedestrian, forcing residents to carry their belongings in backpacks rather than carts. Because the Middle Layer is primarily inhabited by dwarves, outsiders—especially elves—are often required to carry identification papers and can expect occasional questions from the guards.
Navigating this layer is made challenging by its ever-changing structure. The dwarves are constantly demolishing old buildings and erecting new ones, creating a labyrinthine environment where closes and wynds are rarely marked on maps. Local knowledge is essential, and only those familiar with the city’s twists and turns can use shortcuts without becoming hopelessly lost.
For those unfamiliar, however, Roof Hopping is a popular alternative. The few elves who live in this layer often climb onto the rooftops and navigate above the streets. If you know how to read elven sign language, you might even spot plaques offering directions.
Notable Locations
- The Crystal Pools: The largest park in the Middle Layer, featuring an ethereal arrangement of mosses, algae, and calcite crystals. It’s a popular location for meditation, peaceful strolls, and romantic outings.
- The Hall of Legends: A grand museum showcasing the history of Hyste Talma through sculptures, paintings, and technological exhibits. The Hall of Legends, its main chamber, honors the city’s greatest figures—mostly dwarves, though a few statues of elves and other races can be found, subtly modified to dwarf proportions.
- The Forge District: Revered by adventurers and locals alike, this district is a hub of master craftsmanship. Renowned for producing weapons, armor, and tools of exceptional quality, it is essential to remember that dwarves do not haggle. The prices are fair, and suggesting otherwise is considered offensive.
- The Grand Library: The largest library in the region, open to citizens and those granted special permission. It houses books, scrolls, and uncensored information, making it a valuable resource for scholars. Copies of Dragsan propaganda and Kutauri legends are tucked within its countless shelves.
- The Mines: Stretching outward like a spider’s web, the mines are both an active and historical aspect of the Middle Layer. While many tunnels remain in use, some have been abandoned, giving rise to urban legends about lurking monsters. Dwarves delight in sharing horror stories about these hidden dangers.
- The Wall of the Dead: With burials impractical, the citizens of Hyste Talma cremate their dead and transform their ashes into diamonds. These diamonds are placed on the Wall of the Dead, creating a breathtaking, shimmering memorial. When light touches the wall, it glimmers as if covered in stars.
- The Guild Association’s Office: A go-to location for those seeking employment, particularly in craftsmanship or adventuring. The office has a division for adventurers, though the most common tasks often involve clearing out the city’s odorous sewers.
- The Matchmaker’s Market: Known for its red tents and fragrant air, this market is where older dwarves practice the art of matchmaking. While many simply tell hopeful tales for a price, there are true practitioners among them who are said to glimpse the future.
- The Narrow Nook: A gathering place for the magically inclined, including wizards, warlocks, and sorcerers. Though the building appears small on the outside, it is magically expanded within. Membership is granted only after a demonstration of magical prowess before a critical committee.
Cultural and Social Dynamics
The Middle Layer is a world of dwarven practicality and cultural pride. While primarily inhabited by dwarves, the presence of elves, humans, and other races brings an element of diversity. However, the dwarves maintain a watchful gaze, ensuring that the layer’s integrity and traditions are upheld.
Due to the densely packed nature of the streets, social interactions are frequent, fostering a strong sense of community. The ever-changing architecture mirrors the adaptive nature of its inhabitants, who thrive on innovation and problem-solving.
Challenges and Resilience
Life in the Middle Layer is not without its challenges. Overcrowding, ever-shifting streets, and the occasional collapse of aging buildings can disrupt daily life. However, the dwarves’ resilience ensures that problems are swiftly addressed. Their knack for problem-solving, combined with a deep-rooted cultural work ethic, keeps the Middle Layer functioning as the backbone of Hyste Talma.
In these narrow streets and glowing caverns, history is carved into stone and lit by magic.
