Middlewall
The Bastion of the Plains
In the heart of the Sunset Plains, where golden fields stretch endlessly under the watchful sky, stands Middlewall—a fortress-city that marks the midpoint between the Fortress of Dragsa and the eastern frontier. Located 250 kilometers east of Renwick Crossing, Middlewall is a bulwark of order and discipline, a place where Dragsan law is absolute, and the rhythms of military life dictate the pace of everyday existence.
Founding and History
Middlewall was established during the height of the Beastkin Rebellions as a forward command post to protect Dragsan interests in the Sunset Plains. Originally, it was little more than a fortified encampment, but as trade routes expanded and conflict persisted, Queen Anara decreed that a permanent stronghold be erected. Over time, Middlewall evolved into a sprawling military hub, its presence ensuring that no rebel force could move through the plains unchecked.
Architecture and Structure
True to its name, Middlewall is defined by its massive central fortification—a towering citadel constructed of dark stone and reinforced steel, dominating the surrounding landscape. The outer walls, thick and unyielding, encircle the city in a perfect square, with only two heavily guarded gates allowing entry. Watchtowers rise at each corner, providing unparalleled views of the surrounding plains.
Inside, the city is organized with military precision. Streets are laid out in a strict grid, ensuring efficient movement of troops and supplies. The barracks, smithies, and training grounds are the lifeblood of Middlewall, where soldiers are drilled relentlessly before being sent to the frontlines of Dragsan campaigns.
Life and Governance
Middlewall is governed by a Marshal-Governor, a direct appointee of the Dragsan High Command. The city’s population consists primarily of soldiers, their families, and the artisans and laborers who sustain the fortress. Civilians are expected to contribute to the war effort, whether by working in the armories, tending to warhorses, or producing supplies for the garrisoned forces.
Life in Middlewall is regimented and austere. Curfews are enforced, and public order is maintained by a strict military police force. Entertainment is scarce, save for sparring matches in the training yards or the occasional traveling merchant bringing news from the outside world.
Defenses and Strategic Importance
Middlewall is one of the most heavily fortified cities in Kallonia. The walls are imbued with protective enchantments, and its armories are stocked with weapons forged from the Roots of Life mines in Stone Haven. The fortress’ strategic position allows Dragsa to control the flow of goods and personnel across the plains, ensuring that no unauthorized force can cross without detection.
Challenges and Conflicts
Despite its strength, Middlewall is not without threats. The plains may appear peaceful, but lurking beyond the city’s reach are rogue beastkin insurgents, deserters, and opportunistic bandits. The city’s harsh environment also fosters unrest—though Middlewall is a fortress, not all within its walls are willing subjects. Rumors of underground networks aiding escaped beastkin and defectors circulate in hushed whispers, though none dare to speak of it openly.
Yet, for all its burdens, Middlewall remains steadfast. As long as Dragsa marches forward, Middlewall will stand, ever-vigilant, ever-unyielding.
"Middlewall is not a city; it is a promise. A promise that Dragsa's reach will never falter, that its banner will fly unchallenged. But what happens when a promise is broken?"
