Strickland is a down-on-his luck Robot Gladiator from Escanaba.
He was once a popular rising star and was building an enthusiastic following. He had more pride than sense, however, when The Distillery agreed to sponsor him. He agreed to the sponsorship and they paid for all his repairs, making sure that they were compensated from his winnings. After Strickland accrued a significant amount of debt, the sponsor made it so he can no longer compete until his debts are paid or he agrees to sign a contract of indentured servitude.
What he doesn't know is that The Distillery sabotaged his robot the last time in order to inflate the damages and the debt with the goal of turning Strickland into an indentured servant. The Distillery owns most of the gladiators in the lists and regularly fixes the fights.
