Robur the Conqueror Character in A Strange New World | World Anvil

Robur the Conqueror

the Conqueror Robur

This crazy Russian inventor has created a lighter-than-air vehicle he calls Albatross and has travelled around the world in it, following the trade winds.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Raised in a quiet Russian farming town. He started tinkering in his barn when he was a teenager on something that would later become Albatross. He joined the Khorosho Institut Volshebnikov (хорошо институт волшебников) a.k.a. the Well Institute of Magical Tinkerers and in his single-mindedness thought he would be supported in his endeavors. Instead, he was met with ridicule. When he inherited the farm, he let it go to seed in neglect as he put all of his focus onto his contraption(s).

Education

A Technowizard inventor.

Accomplishments & Achievements

His life's work is the Albatross, a lighter-than-air vessel equipped with an assortment of crazy contraptions.

Failures & Embarrassments

Scorned by his peers for his folly. He eventually proved them all wrong when he took Albatross on its maiden voyage. Unfortunately, he didn't equip it with a propulsion system or a means of landing and floated off into the distant trade winds. He nearly perished while crossing the Pacific, but the story of that adventure is for another time.

Mental Trauma

To him, Albatross is not a thing, it is a person. He speaks to it like a temperamental child.

Intellectual Characteristics

Brilliant, but absent-minded. He calls himself "the Conqueror" for no apparent reason other than he thinks it sounds cool.

Morality & Philosophy

A truly peaceful person who is armed to the teeth for the sole purpose of teaching militaristic people the error of their ways. He really doesn't realize the irony of it.

Social

Speech

Will mumble to himself all the time, talking himself up and denouncing his critics.   When he encounters a warlike person or people, he will talk down to them in a stentorian voice, announcing himself as Robur the Conquerer and telling them to denounce their warlike ways or suffer the consequences! That he will do this in Russian and that most people who hear him do not understand Russian hasn't crossed his mind.

Note: This character is named after Jules Verne's Robur the Conquerer, the titular character of Robur the Conqueror and its sequel, Master of the World. While the original inspiration was actually far afield from this (think Baba Yaga and her strange hut), I thought using this name would be a nice Homage to the father of Science Fiction.
