Bai Xue Ying
The eldest child of Bai Yan An and Bai Liqiu, a half-demon wandering cultivator. Xue Ying forms a strong friendship with Zhang Huai Shi and wanders with him for eight years, during which time Huai Shi discovers Xue Ying's parentage through an encounter with Xue Ying's younger brother, Bai Long Chen.
Xue Ying struggles throughout his life with his half human, half demon heritage, first leaning towards his demonic side before trying to abandon it entirely in favor of his human half. Shortly before joining the assassination team during the War of Eternal Day, Xue Ying develops a powerful balance between the two and their conflicting magics, allowing him to play a critical role during the Gilded Retribution, sacrificing himself to save the lives of his friends.
For many years, Xue Ying traveled with his brother Long Chen, who got them in varying degrees of violent trouble. Xue Ying learned to keep himself at a helpful distance where he could examine a situation and pull them out of things if necessary. He and his brother quarrelled often, but kept up a close relationship until Xue Ying began to look into cultivation with their father and question Long Chen's hostile and dismissive attitude towards mortals.
Early in their years wandering together, Xue Ying kept his demonic heritage a secret from his friend. When his sister Bai Rou Ying visited and got stuck in her flame form, Xue Ying carried her in a lantern which he claimed to be a magical artifact until she was able to turn back. When the two friends encountered Long Chen, however, Xue Ying attempted to turn his friend away from helping the village Long Chen plagued. Huai Shi refused, as he had already pledged to help them, and the two argued. Xue Ying left to avoid a confrontation with his brother, but thought better of it and returned in time to find the two in a heated battle against each other. Xue Ying's attempts to stop it without harming either of them only angered Long Chen and confused Huai Shi. After fighting Long Chen off, Huai Shi questioned Xue Ying and the two ended up arguing. Huai Shi left, bitterly angry both about Xue Ying's heritage and his secrecy about it.
Some months later, Huai Shi tracked down Xue Ying and apologized and offered to renew their friendship. Though wary, Xue Ying agreed. The two friends wandered for eight years in total, working together to help out in the turbulent times brought by the Ascension and slowly making progress in Huai Shi's vendetta against his family's wrongdoers. Neither of the two had strong ties to their family homes and their visits were infrequent.
Brothers
Life in the Bai household was exacting and even dangerous as Xue Ying grew up; his mother favored the demon cultural tradition of throwing unexpected challenges at her children to help them develop cunning and strength. Xue Ying learned to read his mother's moods and deflect her intentions. He developed his mother's abilities to conjure fire, but struggled to shapeshift as she did.For many years, Xue Ying traveled with his brother Long Chen, who got them in varying degrees of violent trouble. Wandering Years
Eventually deciding he preferred mortal ways, Xue Ying left the Thousand Vortices to study cultivation and alchemy in Zhenhai. His father helped him on a long quest to find a cultivation sword that would tolerate his half-demon heritage. After that, Xue Ying wandered the country and eventually fell in with Zhang Huai Shi, whose propensity to get into trouble was comfortably similar to Long Chen's. Xue Ying did his best to keep Huai Shi from doing anything too rash in his vengeance against those who had wronged the Zhang family, but did not always succeed.Early in their years wandering together, Xue Ying kept his demonic heritage a secret from his friend.
