Shrine by Danno's Pit
Danno's Pit is a sacred spot for the Heno and particularly in Ankou after the fall of the Empire. It is a tar pit that sabotaged any attempts to mine it for oil, and so it was dedicated to Danno, the God of the Underworld and left alone, seeming to attract various species of noxious weeds.
What's the name of your building? Why?
- It is named Danno's Pit after the underworld deity Danno, who was worshipped by the Heno
- The tar pit is seen as a portal to Danno's Kingdom, and with bones and votives sometimes floating to the surface of the pit, it's believed that Danno can be contacted through it
What’s the purpose of this building?
- Votive offering space
- Place of worship
- Although foraging is illegal, many people poach herbs from this area
- There is a small shelter for pilgrims but it's bare bones because few tourists come to Ankou
How does this building look and feel?
- it is a large tar pit the size of a lake, it smells like ashphalt
- There are a lot of plants around the bank of the pit to try and help the strong smell of tar
- Sometimes things like bones float to the surface and they're seen as good luck
- It seems to be from an old oil rig that broke or exploded, as there is a lot of scorched earth around there where nothing will grow.
- Coriniaid sometimes sleep on its surface, especially during times of food insecurity or bad weather - you can tell it's going to rain if the Coriniaid all settle on its surface
Architecture
The shrine is a tiny house which contains one living space for sleeping/cooking and an inner sanctum to Danno. There is also a public shrine outside in front of the lake to make where offerings can be deposited or thrown.
Tourism
This is a very popular tourist attraction and holy place for pilgrims and locals alike. It is often visited on certain holidays or occasions, and some devotees of Danno even consider it a romantic spot.
