Oil City
Oil City is an old fortification and oil field that is now part of Ankou. It was once a major place to tap oil from, but unfortunately after the ban on Rock Oil the town became mostly deserted and was left as a place for scavengers and vagabonds, until Armael repopulated the area. It is mostly inhabited by Korrigan, and some Kubeleya.
What's the name of your settlement? Why is it called that?
Oil City was a name given to the amusement park which accompanied the community of Hauleios, which housed those who worked a the Hauleios Refinery. When Armael repopulated it, the name was given to revitalize a childhood loved attraction and also for its distinctive anachronistic name. The region was named for Surhaul, a consort of Danno.
How big is this settlement?
- The region encompasses oil sands and refuse, a tar pit known as Kaer Surhaul and a large theme park
- It is home to several different species. The main "civilized" species, referred to as the Known Animals, comprises mostly of Heno (Set animal), Druides (Mothfolk), Wyverns (Wasp), and Myacoris (flies). The Devils, who are considered "uncivilized" are primarily Coriniaid (oil people), and there is over a million of them compared to about 30,000 known animals.
What’s the purpose of this settlement?
- Was originally a planned community for those harvesting and refining oil
- A big industrial place with a nearby planned community, with a large attraction being the Oil City theme park
- The pollution was extensive, and it was one of the first places to collapse when the Clockmaker and other cults of Bel began to gain more influence after the discovery of portable Radio.
- The Druides were the first to populate it again, creating the 'Three Fates Camground', an unofficial settlement. They would inhabit the place alongside the Coriniaid.
- Most of the Druides were chased about by Armael and she initially housed an army there while training in Sealtland.
- Now it houses a lot of Armael's of generals and their retainers, as well as being the spiritual home of the Coriniaid, who live there and make up a large amount of the population
What's the surrounding geography like?
- Bit tar/asphalt pit, rocky and unstable terrain
- Desert, arid land
- Lots of garbage and compressed plastic in the rocks, hills, and general geography
- Dwellings are carved out of compressed garbage and plastic, they also have a lot of things made of celluloid and epoxy resin
What's the tone or vibe here?
- Dark and firey, even though it's not actually either
- The smell of asphalt makes it feel like an overwhelming bronze age metropolis... but after the collapse
- Most was rebuilt on very visible wreckage and little grows here because of the toxic soil. Orache and lichens, polar grasses of groundcover with no trees. The largest structures are oil pumps that are overgrown with noxious weeds.
What does “a roof and a meal” look like here?
- There are a small number of luxury lodgings in the Millionnaires Row that are open to outsiders but tend to cater to locals tastes
- There is a "Millionnaires Row" where a lot of very wealthy criminals live and the town can be very dangerous for outsiders but if you are good at navigation and diplomacy, you can usually make it through. Armael trains her top guard by dropping them in here as a test.
- Very prestigious and private Dark Lithomancy school
- Soap, a lot of soap, and Ankou actually supplies a lot of the soap (by proxy) to areas. That's basically all you can get here, and the known animals learn to live with it. They also harvest makeup like lipsticks for their wax and eyeshadow for mica.
- Few know what it is like to actually live in Oil City as a native resident.
