Naefergrene Manor
Naefergrene Manor is the palace of Old Nick Blackthorne.
How does this landmark look and feel?
- Neo Gothic mansion made of cured wood, stucco, and stone
- Trees are growing out of it everywhere
- Trees. Everywhere
- It is dated and lit badly by different substances - sun can't reach it due to the thickness of the forest
How was this landmark created?
- This was actually supposed to be his family's mausoleum (Old Nick)
- Nick Blackthorne had it built in case the tide turned and he and his family ever needed to flee - knowing that the fear of Double Walkers would only keep them held back.
- Some of his descendants will ask to be buried there
- First Wolfrun's mausoleum was built but then he built his own, currently his daughter Herleva is buried there among some other family members
What special properties does it have?
- This is the centre point for the Naefergrene forest, and "all roads lead" to it, but it's actually got no roads at all. It is purposefully hard to get to, and once you cross its barrier, the air seems to change. Old Nick claims it only appears for "those who need it", but typically the pathways into the Naefergrene show themselves during moments of hallucination or if someone has ingested an incredible amount of poison
- There is a long but straightforward road leading to Naefergrene, that is almost like a spiral. The property backs on to Lake Deorcan, which is the only (somewhat) clearing in the Naefergrene. However, it isn't sure how you can get into the manor's estate from there
What can (and can’t) survive here?
- Double Walkers thrive here
- Alrauna thrive here
- Like many forests, it carries the nine sacred plants, but for Nick it isn't just symbolic, they are plants from those very Alrauna
- Terror Birds who live off of the fruit and the blood of humans, they are often in symbiotic relationships with bats. There are Terror Bird nests as you climb the mountain
- Coriniaid
- The Gannwyll Gwydd and Kubeleya once could live here, but they've been pushed out due to the dangers
Purpose / Function
This sprawling and oddly-constructed manor and mausoleum was constructed initially on top of a safe house Old Nick's mother and sister used after fleeing into the woods.
Defenses
It is one of the only landmarks somewhat detectable from the entrance to the Naefergrene because it follows a now-dry river which was redirected up the mountain. The plants which grow from this place are slightly different and contain traces of Heavy Metal. This allows it to be followed by Heavy Metal users, but Kubeleya don't need magic to feel it. Their tolerance to heavy metals means there is a significant energy change they can sense when there is a concentration, but one that does not cause neurotoxic side effects. Clockmakers have tried setting up Flint markers to allow them navigation use, but these are almost always destroyed by Double Walkers, who steal them.
