Clockmakers
The Clockmakers, also known as the Holy Union of Clockmakers, are the state religion for the Gannwyll Gwydd as well as much of the island. They are a henotheistic religion who worship Bel.
A brief description:
- Religious Order
- Involved in major infrastructure and government
- Based on the use of Flint (quartz, silica, etc.) for timekeeping
- Main deity is Bel, other deities are acknowledged but not worshipped
Their public agenda (purpose, mission, aims)
- Research and development of Flint technology
- Messengers of the God of Light, Bel, who gifted civilization
- Pioneering the Children of Bel into a new aeon, an era free of miasma and being trapped on the Island
- Claim to know the history of the Island, though they mostly borrowed it from the Myacoris
Describe their visuals (flag, motto, uniform)
- Their symbol is a six-spoked wheel, representing both a wheel and the face of a clock
- They typically wear black and white, and dress as priests and monks to varying degrees
- Their motto is "Together to the End of Aeons."
Their secret agenda (if they have one)
- Really trying to hammer home the fact they're definitely not descendants of the Coriniaid and Henoset, and were here the whole time
- They would really like to control the majority of the island as they feel this is the only way to get the fog/haze to lift, and they don't really think anyone else can do it as well as them
- They are pushing toward a monoculture
- They absolutely engage in the occult and are responsible for a lot of the things they claim to be against
- Just like the Gannwyll Gwydd, they have very imperialistic energy
Structure
There is a Papess, who is the Supreme Leader of the Organization.
There are Seven Cardinals, one of whom becomes the next Papess and is replaced by a successor Cardinal.
There are Bishops for each of the recognized territories, who are assigned a Cardinal they report directly to.
Sects
Sects tend to differ per region, particularly depending on the behaviour of the contrasting cultures in the area.
Old Fates Sect: Originates in Sealtland, also in Eskern and Cargast. The oldest continuing (and thus, "original") sect of Clockmakers, they worship Bel as a trinity rather than a single being, seeing Bel as the prophet god to guide their fates. Bel's brothers, Meld and Leuci, are given equal role as his "past and present" influences. Community building and missionary work is popular in this sect, they are also more liberal with allowing Nachkommen to be clergy.
Aerfenism Sect: Split off from Old Fates as a movement focused on Saint Aerfen, a mystic who helped the Larches establish a presence in the Cadmia regions. This is also called the "Old Families sect", as it is primarily heeded by three or four families who were original disciples of Saint Aerfen. Back then, Bel and his brothers were still worshipped as a triad of fate-bestowing Hexen prophets, with the Ioannes pantheon playing a role. Aerfenism is not a recognised sect because it focuses on Saint Aerfen as the point of worship, with Bel and his brothers simply being Earthly prophets of Ioannes.
