Drugs

A drug is any chemical substance that causes a change in an organism's physiology or psychology when consumed. Drugs are typically distinguished from food and substances that provide nutritional support. Consumption of drugs can be via inhalation, injection, smoking, ingestion, absorption via a patch on the skin, suppository, or dissolution under the tongue. Many drugs were differently when used by supernaturals. At the same time some drugs can be supercharged by magic to have an even stronger effect.

Regulations

Drugs are one of the most regulated substances in the world. How they are treated exactly depends a lot of their social perception and the history around it. An increase in regulations against many addictive and harmful substances was started in the 1960s in the Europe and North America. From there it spread to the rest of the world.   Beneficial drugs are heavily regulated as well. These regulations exist to ensure that drugs sold do have the effect that they say they have and no unknow side effects.

Smuggling

The smugglers really were unlucky that we discovered them. If it weren't for the fall of the veil we would have had no chance, but even so it took us a while to understand what as going on. A few years ago a analyst noticed that there were a lot of bananas coming into the US and into Europe that weren't really being sold. I checked it out, but there was nothing I could do. They really were just bananas no matter what we did.   This finally changed after the veil fell in 2016. I realized that maybe some magic was being used. And I was right. They actually used powerful illusion magic to make the boxes of cocaine and marihuana actually appear as if they are boxes of bananas. The magic was so powerful that even if you opened the boxes it was just filled with bananas. We were really handling and opening up packs of drugs when we cut open those bananas. We just couldn't notice.

Drugs are a vital trade resource for many communities and the cartels controlling them in poorer regions of the world. These drugs are then smuggled to Europe, North America and other afluent areas for a high profit. This lucrative business attracts not just humans, but also many supernatural communities. Until the veil fell, many supernatural communities could smuggle undetected from human law enforcement agencies. This does not mean that there were no supernatural communities trying to combat this, but they were just much less funded and could not fight this effectively.

Supernatural Interactions

Supernaturals are often affected by drugs in a different way than humans. In some cases, this is an advantage for supernaturals and sometimes it is not.

Psilocybin

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic prodrug compound produced by Yellow-gilled Gymnopilus and other fungi. This mindaltering substance is used by various people for therapeutic, recreational and spiritual reasons. It is important to use the drug correctly and responsibly to avoid adverse effects like nausea, panic attacks and worse.   For dryads this substance is extremely addictive and leads to the death of the host tree within months of regular use. Dryadic communities all around the world actively combat the cultivation and distribution of the fungi that contain this substance.

Alcohol

A psychoactive drug that is used recreationally by humans and many supernaturals around the world. Some supernaturals are resistant or immune to the effects of this substance. They either just don't drink alcohol or have found alternatives that work on them. For Therians that alternative is twilight wine.
