A roadmap for all things worldbuilding related in Ma’rune.

Mostly, I plan on using this to provide me with a bit of direction with my worldbuilding by splitting things up into different areas of focus. The point of doing that is to also aid in outlining/drafting the choice-based adventure that I’m writing: The Wayfarer.

As I’ve been outlining that, I’ve already started to highlight key points or areas that are going to need explaining to some degree. Those are the types of things that will periodically get added to this roadmap as the whole project progresses.

There will also be a bit of tidying up to do! Specifically around challenge articles, like the ones written for Summer Camp etc.

So sit back and take a look at what’s coming up!

Phase One

Summer Camp 2020 Cleanup

These articles have been hanging around, completely neglected, since 2020. It was pretty early in my worldbuilding for Ma’rune too, so there’s probably a lot on there that a) needs a major overhaul to fit the vibes of the world, b) a proof to make sure it aligns with stuff I’ve written since, and c) just making the articles look better. Because I can guarantee you, the styling / formatting for the articles would have been pretty basic across the board.

Here is a list of the SC 2020 articles that need tidying up:

Major Characters

I’ve already done quite a bit of the groundwork for this, but I want to get it finished. After all, these guys will be the ones with an important role to play in The Wayfarer, so it would be great to have a solid base for all of these characters before I get to the parts where I, you know, actually have to write about them.

This area will include the following characters:

The Gods

There are a whole host of deities in Ma’rune with various ties to the story, which means I really need to start figuring out who they are and what they oversee. They also have an impact on the worldbuilding itself, and could come up in things like old wives tales that people from certain regions tell each other, or have directly impacted an area or the life of an individual in some way or another. So in a similar vein to the major characters, knowing who each of the gods are will give me a better understanding of what they might have influenced.

 

Phase Two

Locations: The Global Level

This is going to be all about the twelve kingdoms.

Whilst they won’t all feature in The Wayfarer, knowing how the kingdoms that do feature interact with the others will still be important. I want it to feel like the world is lived in, but I can’t do that if everyone’s opinions are isolated to the single location that they just happen to be in at that time in the story.

Magic

Another area that I’ve already made a bit of a start on. In fact, I have quite a good basis for magic already, so this will mainly be about fine tuning what’s already there and building on the foundations.

There may be some tweaks of course. I started planning the magic system years ago, so there may be some minor changes or bits and pieces that I thought would make for cool additions whilst planning out The Wayfarer.

The Species of Ma’rune

I feel a bit like a broken record at this point, but again this is another area where I’ve started laying the foundations for something more. This one is definitely going to have a lot of tweaks to existing content - looking at you, Daelin and Beastfolk articles - but I’m really looking forward to digging in and revamping this particular area.

 

Phase Three

Locations Focus: Yondar

In phase three, I’ll look at specific parts of each of the twelve kingdoms. Yondar, since it will be the kingdom that features most prominently in the first book of The Wayfarer, is the logical place to start.

Now, this is solely going to be details and worldbuilding around the locations in Yondar. The towns and villages, the open plains and stretches of woodlands, or the places that the Beastfolk or Daelin may call home. That will hopefully give me a lot of future content to riff off of in later phases of the roadmap!

History

Somehow, I always end up forgetting about the history of a world when I’m planning out what aspects I want to write about. I guess I always think it will come up during over bits of worldbuilding and whilst that is true, if I’m going to be writing a story set in Ma’rune, I’m going to as a minimum need to know about the major historical events that have taken place.

Religions

This one will follow on a little bit from the worldbuilding I will have done around the gods in phase two.

There are a couple of religions that I’ve already written about in a bit of detail, but those are of course subject to change depending on how the gods and their lore develops. Especially the Church of Van-Hael and everything around that in particular because, again, very early days worldbuilding before I had a good idea of what I wanted things to look like.

 

Previous Phases

There’s nothing here yet! I’ll move content from above into this section as and when it’s been ‘completed’ so that there’s a nice little history of all the worldbuilding I’ve already done.
