Wyviira Bone

We know the ancient dragons - or as the daelin call them ‘wyviira’ - died out around 1600 LF, but there is little knowledge available for us to create any substantial theories as to why. They were kings and queens of the land they soared above. No living creature dared touch them; that much we can gather from tales passed down from generation to generation of human, daelin and beastfolk alike.

Every piece of evidence we gather of their existence is crucial. From the smallest fragment of bone, to the mighty wyviira jaws that were found buried beneath the ice of Deathwalk Valley in Vorne. We must take any and every chance we get to study the pieces of these ancient beasts that are still with us today, not only to further our own theories or piece together history, but also to honour the memory of such legends.

Rarity

Extremely rare

Since the last of the wyviira died out, the only real evidence of their existence (outside of stories and historical texts) is their bones buried beneath the ground. To date, no complete wyviira skeletons have been found. The closest anyone has come to finding a complete skeletal were the wyviira jaws found beneath Deathwalk Valley, but recovery of the rest of the skeleton has proven difficult. Extracting it from the ice is a painfully slow process as the scholars want each and every bone to be intact enough to actually study it.

For the average citizen, wyviira bones are nothing remarkable. After the jaw was found beneath Deathwalk Valley, it generated a lot of interest, but it quickly died down as more and more people decided it would be infinitely more exciting to find an actual, living wyviira than a bunch of dusty old bones.

For scholars across all of Ma’rune finding wyviira bones is just as interesting as finding a living wyviira would be. Each and every bone reveals a piece of history once lost to time. So far, using the wyviira bones that have already been uncovered and various historical texts, scholars have identified at least three different wyviira species.

Wyviira bones will always sell for a hefty price no matter how small the piece of bone is. Private collectors tend to pay more than scholars (they have a larger funding pool to draw from because most of them a rich lords or ladies of the land), but a lot of mercenaries or wyviira archaeologists will opt to sell to scholars instead in order to further their discoveries. For this reason, private collectors hire their own personal mercenaries to hunt for wyviira bones, as well as hiring spies to steal information about current or suspected wyviira burial sites.

Zachary appraises the ancient bone with an analytical eye. Perfectly preserved, a little cold to the touch, curved, thick and not too fragile. A little on the small side, but still Zachary smiles to himself; perhaps the wyviira was young when it died?

“Zach, love, what do you make of it?” Theodore asks tentatively. He eyes the bone over Zachary’s shoulder, waiting with baited breath.

The kitra-kryn mercenary that brought the bone to them smiles, a flash of sharp, white canines. “Yes, love,” she says mockingly, tail swishing, “what do you make of it?”

Theodore want to bit back – know your place, you foolish little – but Zachary beats him to it. The picture of a calm and collected lord.

“I think it’s the real deal. Though that tongue of yours has cost you a hundred platinum crowns.”

The kitra-kryn mercenary laughs. “You’re saying we have a deal then?”

Major Discoveries

First identification of wyviira bones:

  • 1095 LF
  • Found underwater, off the western coast of Alterby, Rennarsie
  • Scholars believe it to be part of the tail bone of an ocea wyviira

Largest burial site to date:

  • A fryos wyviira under Deathwalk Valley
  • Found in 544 AL after a chunk of ice and snow fell away into the caverns below
  • So far, only the skull has been successfully recovered. Attempts to recover the rest of the skeleton are still ongoing (scholars believe the rest of the skeleton may have fallen deeper in to the caverns)

Potential burial sites for full wyviira skeletons:

  • Mount Falunvar in central Ca’astan
  • Wanderer’s Bay off the southern coasts of Yondar
