Queen Oriole

Lady/Governor/Advisor/Queen Kamaria Oriole

Kamaria Oriole was the first and only Queen  of the Oriole Dynasty. She ruled the Faerie Empire for 47 years before stepping down after the dissolution of the Empire. In 32 Oriole, Kamaria was targeted by the revolutionary/extremist group known as Vanessa's Avengers, who wished to do away with the monarchy. After Vanessa's Avengers were defeated, Kamaria called together a summit to discuss peacefully transitioning out the monarchy. She continued to play a major role into the Silent Revolution, but ultimately stepped out of the public eye after the official dissolution of the Empire.

Special abilities

Kamaria possesses a high magic level, over which she has strong control.

Apparel & Accessories

Crown + Jewels

As the Queen of Faerie, Kamaria is required to wear the ceremonial jewels at all official functions. The current set of royal jewels were made during the Eternity Dynasty, after the remaining pieces of the prior sets had been stolen. The jewels consist of: a crown, a necklace, a set of earrings, a brooch, four rings, and two bracelets.     (image of Kamaria wearing the crown, earrings, necklace, and brooch)     The crown is made of gold and set with three gemstones: two white diamonds and an amethyst gem. It is made to encircle the entire head, with the gemstones in the front and a narrow band of gold stretching around the rest of the head. This design is modeled off of historical depictions of the first Queen Diamond. The necklace is made of a series of gold, silver, and platinum chains braided together, with four obsidian pendants. The style reflects elements of jewelry said to be worn by both Queen Air II and Queen Grove IV.     The earrings are one of the first direct copies within the collection. The original set was made specifically for Queen Eternity I, but was stolen with the rest of the jewels in 26,492 Eternity. The replicas worn by Queen Oriole consist of large Jadeite spheres wrapped in perfect loops of copper.     The brooch is based on one worn by Queen Thicket III. It has platinum backing and small, multi-coloured sapphires which shape out a mosaic of a flower. Both bracelets, meanwhile, are based on designs from the Terra Dynasty. They are formed from wide bands of gold, each inlaid with three vibrant emeralds and one black opal.     (image showing the bracelets)     The four rings are all based on new designs, created during the Shadow Dynasty to showcase the vast history of the Faerie Empire. The first ring, designed to reflect the Emberton Empire, is made of a thick band of silver, encrusted with 'smokey' diamonds and a single red-orange sapphire. The second ring was designed around the Early Dynasties of the Faerie Empire. The band of the ring is made of gold, and starts off narrow on the back of the finger and gets wider as it moves towards the gems. The ring is inlaid with a massive white diamond encircled by small pieces of topaz and moonstone.     (Image showing a side and front view for all four rings)     The third ring is somewhat different from the others. Due to the intense dislike for the Storm Dynasty, the design for this ring does not reflect the most well known Middle Dynasty. Instead, the ring is made of a thin band of platinum, which bends to create four loops at the front of the ring. At the top of each of these loops sits a small gemstone: one jade, one pearl, one amber, and one quartz. The fourth ring was supposed to symbolize the Late Dynasties. However, as the ring was designed during the Shadow Dynasty, it was not made with any knowledge of the Oriole Dynasty. This ring is made of a thin, smooth band of copper. A single, perfectly spherical jadeite gemstone is set into the centre, with two smaller pieces of obsidian flanking it.

General Apparel

As Governor, Kamaria favoured more form fitting, long sleeve dresses with no surcoat. She often accessorized with wrist length gloves, heeled shoes, a shawl, and a veiled hair piece. During this time, she often stuck to the house colours of House Oriole (blue, purple, and black) as a base, but allowed for a more expansive colour pallete built of of them. She was also known to wear a necklace made of a lavender ribbon with a gold and amethyst pendant.     While serving as on Advisor, Kamaria seemed to move away from her house identity. During this time, she experimented with a variety of styles and colours. At this time, she also wore much more jewelry than she previously had.     When Kamaria became Queen, she mainly wore more traditional dresses, and went back to wearing house colours. She often wore ornate, layered gowns with long gloves and the royal jewels. While in hiding, she wore a more simple, shorter dress with a cloak and boots. At the battle, Kamaria wore Dusk Bloom armour, although she was not involved in any of the fighting.     After the dissolution of the Empire, Kamaria stopped wearing almost all of her former house colours. She prefered formal but practical dresses and little jewelry. During this time, she also started wearing her necklace again.

Specialized Equipment

The necklace that Kamaria wore as Governor and Diplomat was made by her mother. It has an enchantment on it which helps protect the wearer from harm.

Personal history

Early Life

Kamaria Oriole was born in the year 22,498 Shadow to Governor Erlan Oriole of River Centre and his wife Lady Oriole. She had a younger brother, named Siveril, who she was very close to growing up. Kamaria grew up on her father's estate in River Centre. She was taught by private tutors and had a fairly standard noble childhood.     When she was 96, Kamaria contracted River Fever. After a few months, she recovered from the illness. However, the lasting effects of the illness have weakened her immune system and caused chronic pain throughout her life.     From the time that she was 162, Kamaria trained specifically to take on her father's duties when she inherited the Governorship.

Rise To Power

After coming of age, Kamaria worked as a secretary under her father for several years. He passed when she was 792, and Kamaria became the governor of River Centre.     During her time as Governor, Kamaria was involved in a scandal which created a divide between herself and Siveril. This feud ended on the Day Of No Moon when Kamaria was 943. Both siblings refused to dine together, an action culturally equivalent to disowning. Neither spoke to each other again for a long while.     When she was 3,298, Kamaria was offered a seat on the Board of Advisors. She accepted the role, leaving the Governorship and moving to Emberton. Kamaria then served on the Board for 1423 more years, until the last heir of Shadow abdequeted, and the Board choose Kamaria to succeed.

Marriage and Family

After moving to Emberton, Kamaria began dating Akéa, who she later married. Akéa and Kamaria later adopted two children Dádha and Merana. As of 32 Oriole, Dádha is a young adult and third in line to the throne, after both of her moms. Merana is a young teenanger, and forth in line after their moms and sister. Kamaria spends a great deal of time with her family.

As Queen

While not the shortest reigning Queen of Faerie, (that honor goes to the third Queen Air, who was Queen for a little over 3 months before being assassinated) Queen Oriole is the first and only Queen of the shortest Dynasty. During her time as Queen, she was known for her values of justice, peace, and equality, which were often reflected in her policies.     Despite being relatively well liked, Kamaria was a somewhat controversial Queen. Many nobles decried her attempts to transition the Faerie government system into a more democratic system. At the same time, revolutionaries criticized her for not doing enough.     Ultimately, Kamaria and her family was targeted by the extremist/revolutionary group Vanessa's Avengers . Following the Emberton Attacks of 32 Oriole, Kamaria re-established contact with Siveril, and sent Merana to live with him in River Centre. Meanwhile, the rest of the royal family went into hiding first at the Order of Sky temple, and later traveling to Dusk Bloom lands. Following the last major battle against Vanessa's Avengers, Queen Oriole and the other royals returned to the palace.     In the closing days of the Empire, Queen Oriole aided in all 14 Freedom Summits. She is known to have been one of the key figures in securing peaceful transitions, and one of the nine original diplomats who drafted the first Articles of Transition.

Post-empire

After the official dissolution of the Empire, Kamaria largely stepped out of the public eye. She continued to work as a diplomat, though she prefered work in the Otherlands, where her past as Queen was not well known. Eventually, she retired and moved back to River Centre. Kamaria lived in her father's old estate with her brother, wife, children, and grandchildren for the rest of her days.

Education

Kamaria Oriole received a good education from several private tutors on her father's estate in River Centre. She would latter attend and graduate from the River Centre University.     After joining the Board of Advisors, Kamaria began taking classes at the School of Diplomats in Emberton. After the resolution of the Empire, she attended and graduated the School of Diplomats.

Employment

As a young woman, Kamaria worked under her father, who was Governor of River Centre. She became the Governor after his passing. Kamaria served as Governor of River Centre for over 2500 years.     In the later years of the Shadow Dynasty, Kamaria Oriole was offered a seat on the Board of Advisors in Emberton. She accepted, leaving the governorship to her estranged brother and moving to Emberton. Kamaria served on the Board of Advisors for over half a millenia before being chosen to succeed the last Shadow Queen. Kamaria was Queen for 47 years, before the Empire was officially dissolved and she stepped down.     After the dissolution of the Empire, Kamaria and her wife both became prominent diplomats, with Akéa even becoming a politician in her own right. Kamaria spent much of her time working outside of the former Empire, prefering to give the people of Faerie full control of their own countries.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Becoming Queen

Kamaria Oriole became Queen at the age of 4720. She was a high advisor to the council during the late Shadow Dynasty, and was chosen by the Board of Advisors to take the throne after the last Shadow heir abdequated.     At this time, Kamaria was relatively well known throughout the Empire as the former Governor of River Centre, an outspoken member of the Board, and a firm believer in Day. This reputation made her moderately well liked amongst the majority of Fae society, though she still had many enemies.

The Rustburg Crisis

In the fifth year of Kamaria's Queenship, a sudden resurgence of Creeping Madness in the swamps near the town of Rustburg occured. The resurgence had devastating effects on the swamp, as well as decimating a local Wild Mage group and infecting the people of Rustburg. Queen Oriole responded quickly, coordinating with High Priest Viveno and the Order of the Sky to contain the spread, evacuate the infected areas, secure treatment and temporary housing for those affected, and fighting back against the deadly vine.     Many people praised her response, noting the decisiveness and compassion of her actions. Under previous Dynasties, Creeping Madness was rarely treated as such a threat unless it directly affected trade. Additionally, the Nature Mages cited her willingness to aid them which had been lacking under other Queens. The Creeping Madness was eventually eradicated from that area, and Rustburg began to recover. However, the vines had done a great deal of damage to the farmland in the region, as well as diminishing the Nature Mages' food sources. In another unprecedented move, Queen Oriole had further aid sent in not only for Rustburg, but also for the affected Nature Mages.     As of 32 Oriole, this area has nearly completely recovered, and those who live there are often fiercely loyal to the Queen.

Policies Promoting Higher Standard of Living

Queen Oriole is primarily a follower of Day. However, she also has a great deal of faith in Moon's ideals of redemption and mercy. Both deities ideals can be seen in her most successful policies:
  • The Rustburg Act (7 Oriole): Reformed and Updated the Crisis Relief Acts of the Eternity Dynasty, creating a specialized Crisis Response Corps within the Faerie military designed to work directly with the Order of Sky.
  • The Far Empire Infrastructure Act (9 Oriole): A 3 trillion gold plan to update and revamp the infrastructure in the poorest regions of the Far Empire over the course of the next 50 years. The plan includes repairing roads, establishing safe water access, building and improving schools, supporting public services, and encouraging growth of industry.
  • Education Reform Act (10 Oriole): Raised the minimum legal requirement of years in school from 30 to 40, provided tax incentives for families below the poverty line who sent their kids to school, created the Oriole Scholarship for students of academic excellence from impoverished families.
  • Justice System Reform (25 Oriole): A 62 million gold plan to reform the justice system, provide education, job training, and employment for former convicts, and address key issues that contribute to crime.
  • Feeding Faerie Act (30 Oriole): Created a council of Faerie and Order of Sky officials with the goal of ending hunger in Faerie by the turn of the century. As of 32 Oriole, hunger has decreased by 17% in the Far Empire and 39% in the Central Empire.

Failures & Embarrassments

River Centre Scandal

Long before she was the Queen of Faerie, or even an Advisor, Kamaria Oriole was the Governor of River Centre. She first made Empire wide news for what is now called the River Centre Scandal. The Governor was discovered to frequent the Silver Star Club, a lower-class establishment with a cerian ... reputation. After the press got a hold of this information, rumors began flying. Many people started calling for Kamaria to abdicate, believing her younger brother would be a better governor. This caused a divide to grow between the two siblings, which also quickly caught the public's eyes.     As the press continued to play up the events in River Centre, Kamaria and her brother grew more and more distant. This accumulated at the annual celebration of The Day Of No Moon, at which the siblings refused to dine together. As the Day Of No Moon is generally seen as a celebration of family, refusing to dine with a family member is seen as socially equivalent to disowning them. As far as anyone knows, neither have spoken to each other since.     After Kamaria joined the Board of Advisors, her brother took the position of Governor of River Centre.

The Emberton Renewal Debate

During Kamaria's time as a member of the Board of Advisors, the Emberton Renewal Act was being proposed. This Act would put 98 million gold into infrastructure upgrades and repairs in Emberton, as well as green spaces and art. Contrary to her usual agenda, Kamaria argued against the Emberton Renewal Act, citing that other parts of the Empire needed the money more. The Act was passed any ways, and many criticized Kamaria for opposing it.

New Gracian Civil War

Towards the end of Kamaria Oriole's time as an Advisor, civil war broke out in the Faerie/Glacian regions of Golden Lake and New Gracia between ethnic Gracians and the Glacian Government. Kamaria was one of three representatives sent from the empire to attempt to negotiate peace. However, peace talks quickly broke down, and the diplomats had to be evacuated. The New Gracian Civil War continued off and on into and through her Queenship, eventually coming to an end during the Silent Revolution era.

Unsuccessful Policies

  • The Governor Reform Act (12 Oriole): An act that proposed the Governors be chosen by a council every generation, instead of following family lines. Media called Kamaria out for the perceived continuation of her feud with her brother, who was currently the Governor of River Centre. The Act was not passed.
  • The New Health Access Act (36 Oriole): This 930 million gold plan called for a non-religiously tied hospital to be built in every city. As of the end of the Oriole Dynasty, only 5% of cities in the former empire had a hospital.

The Dark Heart Swamp Crisis

In the year 32 Oriole, the Dark Heart Swamps were attacked by strange magical influences, which caused animals and plants to attack, otherworldly creature to appear, and other dangerous magical effects to take hold. Over a dozen guardians responded to the various calls for help, but were unable to stop the happenings. Queen Oriole had the swamps evacuated, and established temporary settlements for the displaced populations, but was only able to keep the crisis contained.     Many people compared her response then to her earlier handling of the Rustburg Crisis, and began to wonder if she really cared about those living in the swamps after all.

Morality & Philosophy

Kamaria Oriole believes strongly in the philosophies of Day and Moon. The two deities are usually thought to compliment each other by their differences, as Moon is the god of redemption and peace, and Day is the goddess of justice and equality. Kamaria balances these differing philosophies by upholding justice, while also offering redemption and avoiding violence when possible.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Throughout her political career, Kamaria was motivated by her belief in justice, peace, and freedom. She is also very devoted to her family, and will go to great lengths to ensure their safety. Ultimately, it was this love that drove Kamaria to speed up her plans to dissolve the Empire, deciding that if they weren't the royal family anymore, they would no longer be under such threats of assassination.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Kamaria is an extremely skilled diplomat and negotiator. She has worked in politics and diplomacy for her entire life, and graduated from the School of Diplomats with high honors. She also has strong magical abilities, and wields good control over them. This allows for Kamaria to be a powerful and skilled magic user. Due to her career as a political leader, Kamaria is an excellent public speaker and speech writer.     One of the biggest obstacles to Kamaria's political and social career is that she is a terrible dancer. Since dance is an important social and political function in may Fae cultures, this creates problems. Another very useful skill that Kamaira is lacking in is combat ability. While she had to learn self-defense as both a Governor and Queen, she is not very proficient in battle. Additionally, Kamaria is a pacifist and will avoid violence and conflict when possible. Finally, Kamaria is terrible at poetry, painting, and generally any artistic endeavour. This usually is not too much of a problem, but it embarasses her greatly. She avoids any conversation or activity involving the arts, despite her usual interest in learning about other cultures.

Virtues & Personality perks

Kamaria is known for her patience, especially when it comes to those different from herself. The only two people she is known to have lost patience with are Siveril and Lord Nebula. She has also demonstrated incredible humility and kindness throughout her career. These traits are part of why she was so popular on the Board of Advisors, and what made her a good diplomat.

Vices & Personality flaws

Kamaria's greatest flaws have always been her anxiousness and uncertainty, which often cause her to hesitate. She will oftentimes doubt her choices, and has a hard time when situations have no right answer. while she is not public with these doubts, the media has often criticized her hesitations. Akéa has noticeably helped to ease this, often helping Kamaria work through her uncertainty.     Kamaria has also been criticized for her idealism and pacifism. Many people have called her naive, ignorant, and cowardly.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Kamaria had close contacts in the Order of Sky, and knew Viveno Heaven personally. After the dissolution of the Empire, Kamaria remained friends with Viveno. As Queen, Kamaria was also a close ally of the Dusk Bloom Kingdom and Queen Athena of the Wild Mages. This came in handy when the Dusk Blooms provided protection to the Royal Family during the Vanessa's Avengers crisis.

Family Ties

Kamaria is the sister of Governor Siveril of River Centre, though they were estranged for quite some time. Her wife, Akéa Oriole, became a politician after the dissolution of the Empire and sat on the High Council of Faerian States for a time.

Religious Views

Kamaria is a follower of the Pantheon of Heaven, specifically the deities Day and Moon. She is not strongly religious, but is rather a fierce believer in the ideals the deities represent.

Wealth & Financial state

Kamaria was born a noble, and as such lived an upper class lifestyle. As of 32 Oriole, she had 30 million in gold and an estimated 290 million in assets.
