Queen of Faerie

The Queen of Faerie is the chosen ruler of the Faerie Empire, said to be the High Queen or the Queen above all others.   Pictured: Queen Air I and Queen Oriole I, the first and last Queens of Faerie

Requirements

The most basic requirement to be Queen is to be the next in line to the throne, as either a child, sibling, or other relative of the last Queen, or to be chosen by the Royal Council. Since the start of the Eternity Dynasty, an aptitude test has also been required to take the throne.

Appointment

A new Queen must be confirmed by the Royal Council, then Crowned at a public event. While it is not a requirement, it is traditional for the Order of the Sky to acknowledge the new Queen, and provide a Guardian to their house if there is not one already.

Duties

The Queen is the political leader of the Faerie Empire. While recent legislation has distributed more power to the local governments, the Queen still holds a lot of power. Queens can still pass decrees and legislative motions, though they must get approval from the Council of Royals to change or add laws, go to war, or complete other actions.

Benefits

The benefits of Queenhood are immense. The Queen and their family live in the palace in Emberton, and are given access to the finest education, entertainment, food, clothing, ect. So long as a Queen is able to maintain a Dynasty, they and their offspring will be guaranteed a life of comfort and luxury.   Many relatives of Queens are able to pursue careers in government, law, science, and art, even if they aren't directly in line for the throne.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

There are a number of conditions under which a Queen might be removed from office. The oldest and most obvious way is by dying, being killed, or otherwise becoming physically or mentally incapacitated. Additionally, if a rival Queen takes the city and has the people's support, the former Queen is effectively stripped of power.   In more modern times, Queens can be removed by the Royal Council, or by a majority vote within the Councils of nobles and other local ruling bodies. Queens can also be asked to retire if the Royal Council finds they are no longer mentally, emotionally, or physically capable of ruling. At this point, the crown passes to the next in line.   If there are no fit candidates for Queenhood, or the only fit candidate abdicated, the Royal Council will select a new Queen. often these new Queens come from the Royal Council or other government bodies.

History

The rank Queen of Faerie was first created by Queen Diamond I when they created the Faerie Empire. Throughout the Early Dynasties, it was simply passed down through families or to the next top government official. After the first Faerie Civil War, the Royal Council was formed as part of many attempts to restore faith in the monarchy. At the time it wasn't very powerful and simply smoothed the transition of power.   Following the catastrophic end of the Storm Dynasty and the resulting Civil War, the Royal Council was given significantly more power and the first aptitude tests were introduced to the Queenship.   Recently further steps have been taken to limit the Queen's power and increase the autonomy of smaller regions. Following the rogue faction Vanessa's Avengers attempt to bring down the monarchy, work has been put in motion to dissolve the empire peacefully. The role of Queen of Faerie will presumably end with either Kamaria Oriole or her daughter.

Cultural Significance

The term Queen has long been used in numerous Fae societies to denote some kind of leader or high ranking official. In earlier times it was used to signal an exceptionally high rank in any field, like the Queen-Mages in Emberton or the Queen-Generals in West Sylvania.   It's highly possible this kind of usage will return to some parts of the old empire as the governmental associations are lost.
