The Tamers of Deep Æter

Not all things sought are meant to be found.
— Gáláwán saying

Summary

The Tamers of Deep Æter was an ancient organization which did not last very long and casted all its members to insanity. The fellowhood was a branch of the Tamers of Æter — one of the oldest skald schools known to take part in the Gathering ritual. Some students of the Tamers of Æter searched for a connection between the Depth and Æter. What they hoped to find was the chaotic force that distorted the deepest parts of the Unconscious, that curled its very core. They found it; to their and their descendants demise.

There exists a force, which is roughly described as the Deep Æter — a subdomain of it, visible and felt only by those, who synchronize to it. But as understanding the Depth is a difficult task and taming the Æter demands a huge amount of mental strength, there are none, who are known to have mastered both. All who have attempted to synchronize with the Deep Æter have lost their senses, mind and humanity in a different way. After taking a shot at the impossible task, all Tamers of Deep Æter are said to be gone. Alas, history could never forget them, nor their deeds.

What they wanted to achieve?

To understand and tame the grand force (The Deep Æter) behind the fluctuations of the unconscious. They understood that the Tamers of the Depth do the job by reacting to the state that is already present, but wanted to destroy the force at the very core — the Deep Æter, as they called it, was the chaotic force that they found responsible for the fluctuations in the soul.

The structure

The structure of the Tamers of Deep Æter was never fully established. The thing started as a project initiated by fellow students of the Tamers sections, i.e., Tamers of Depth and Tamers of Æter. The hypothesis was such that by combining the knowledge of both schools, it would be possible to tame the Deep Æter. Thus, after a failure of a start, the branch dissolved swiftly. There were no further attempt to resurrect the project.

Bad name

What swiftly led to the demise of the Tamers of Deep Æter from the history was how the Deep Æter manifested in their souls. Those, who insufficiently prepared synchronized with it led their internal foundations be twisted, bended and broken like twigs. The former skald learning the art of taming the Depth has lost his internal sight to anything but extremely intense emotions. In consequence, he could only feel anything when either suffering or by leading others to suffer. It was common for those in contact with the Deep Æter to oscillate between homicide and suicide. The damaged would gather at some point to try and tame the Deep Æter together, as a hive mind. A futile struggle. The madness would in the end cut them to shreds as well.

It was known at the forecomming Gatherings that the Deep Æter is too dangerous and that the Taming of the Deep Æter should be named a forbidden art. Even many years after that, not all students have emerged. Some were deemed missing, others were hoped to be dead and gone. Many years of fear and chaos have passed before parents could put their children to sleep in true peace.

Author's Notes

There are things in the unconscious that scare the living hell out of me. At one point when I struggled with depression all things that could do more harm came to mind. So as Æter is a chaotic force that surrouds and encapsulates all concepts, there should be a Deep part of it, i.e., Deep Æter, which would be responsible for the chaotic whirls in emotions, soul, sometimes the very existence.

Depression is a tricky being — it distorts the reality in a way difficult to describe, let alone to fully grasp. I wanted to picture an organization which had a very good hypothesis, but, as often is the case with students and kids, did not make enough effort to prepare for the plan to backfire. Some doors are never meant to be opened, because they can never be closed. Deep Æter may be one of them.
