After spending the next few hours in preparation to resist the approaching army, the battle commenced. Wave after wave of attackers broke against our walls, finally cresting the battlements to press us further. The Black Rift Army brought forward the Decimation Engine, a huge juggernaut of a construct that rushed the gates, crashing through them after a few blows. We were able to stall the mighty construct with traps and abilities, as we received word from the mage Elowen that he had completed transporting the refugees through the portal within the keep. At that, we withdrew from the oncoming forces, sheltering in the main building of the keep.
After a brief respite, we barely had time to make further preparations before the Black Rift Army started to break down the doors and walls of the keep, the magical enhancements Elowen was able to apply running out of power. Examination of the keep revealed that there were some other invocations that could be activated, but it seemed clear that these could be deadly to anyone desperate, or foolhardy, enough to try to use them.
As the Decimation Engine broke through, other forces from the army charged underneath and around it. We continued to fight a delaying action, as Elowen continued to try to get the last remnants of the refugees through the portal. We were making headway damaging the Engine until it cast some kind of draining burst that damaged ally and enemy alike, but all of that damage to restoring its own structure. As we fought, unleashing most of the remains of our powers, Reaper was caught among the enemy forces, feeling like he needed to trigger one of the invocations to buy us more time. Power raged through him as he fought through the forces, but after a short time, the power waned, and Reaper found himself vulnerable. One enemy struck well, dropping Reaper immediately.
As the last of the refugees exited through the portal, I was able to whisk Reaper’s dead form through the portal with me, the other senior officers following closely behind. The other side of the portal dropped us not far from Ptolus. Elowen and the refugees expressed their gratitude, offering jewels as rewards. Commander was also able to recruit a fair number of the refugees to join our forces, and perhaps become a fighting force which could even help to liberate their lost lands in the future.
