Session 43: The Divine Trial of the Shooting Stars

by Spook

After a couple days of rest, each of us awoke to find ourselves in our rooms at the barracks, as usual. Upon opening our doors, however, we were each confronted with a portal occupying the entirety of the doorway. After some internal deliberations by some, we each eventually passed through our doorways and found ourselves in another space.

It was a strange, ancient hallway, older than Bait could estimate. Passing into the hall, we were greeted by a verse on the walls. I did not capture the whole of the verse, but it was clear that our bonds between each other would be tested in this place.

As we entered the next room, we found a strange place appearing like the firmament of night with stars surrounding us. We were then bound to another of our group by a golden light. The pairings were Grace and Reaper, Scar and Bait, and Points and myself. In turns, each of our pairs were challenged to answer questions about each other, magical platforms appearing (or cracking) depending on our answers. Some groups were more challenged than others, but we all eventually passed the challenge, perhaps with an understanding of how much, or how little, we actually knew about each other.

Entering the next room, we found ourselves still tethered in pairs, we were challenged to cross a series of platforms in pairs. The magic of the place appeared to judge some things, like flight, as “cheating”, but did allow some other spells or item use. Points and I relied on our acrobatic skills to pass the challenge. Ther pairs needed to be more creative, and both needed to use the strange properties of the tethered bond to save a falling partner, giving some of themselves in the process. A strange griffon creature harried us as we attempted to cross, and we found that the tethers also transferred damage between the paired team members. As we all crossed the starry chasm, we entered the final room.

The final room was a large space, again recalling the starry skies. We were confronted by an angelic creature — Astreus, and combat commenced. Points was controlled, requiring the use of our tethering bond to free him, but overall, our damage capabilities allowed us to overcome the challenge. Upon completion, we were gifted a magical mace and a cloak of flying. We were also told to prepare for the next trial — the Moon Trial, wherein we would face our ”true selves”.

We were also given a message that ”such greatness will come when most in need“.

After this time, we found ourselves returned to our quarters, with our health and resources restored, as if none of the events had happened.
