Memories of the fallen angel, the burnt cabin mystery unveiled.

by Vareon Brookwan

You suddenly find yourself in vastly different surroundings. Forest smells fill your nostrils, a soft mountain breeze ruffles your hair, leaves rustle in the canopy and briefly move to shed a small beam of moonlight onto your warm skin. Your senses tell you this is where you are yet you don’t feel “you”. You slowly take a few steps in the direction of a small but familiar cabin you notice in a forest clearing, but the earth moves below your feet as if on a treadmill. Smoke circles up from the cabin, but not from its chimney. The few small windows glow with a soft red and orange. A familiar male voice suddenly cries out from the cabin “Alda! No!”.

You rush through the burning cabin in which you spent so many years as a youth. In the living room you stumble into a peculiar scene. Thorsten and Alda are there, as is the fallen angel you met mere moments ago and several smaller creatures that you recognize as “imps”. The fallen angel lifts a heavy mace off the bashed head of Alda. “It said no witnesses”. You try and scream out, but it seems this is a reality you’re disconnected from.

The imps look at the fallen angel befuddled for a short while and turn back to study a very very long piece of parchment. One imp holds it from the top near the ceiling while other imps hold it as it stretches across the floor and the furniture. Neither the imps, the angel, nor the scroll seem bothered by the flames, but Alda and Thorsten are badly burned. On the scroll is a signature in a handwriting you are shocked to recognize. It clearly reads “Morningstar” with an appended “sr”.
As you try and gather your wits, the imps and the fallen angel enter in a heated discussion over what they keep calling “the Contract”. Meanwhile Thorsten seems unable to understand what is going on as he whimpers for mercy and cries for the brutal loss of his beloved Alda. The imps cry out: “See here! Senior asked for their termination and for proof, but it doesn’t stipulate a definition of termination.”; “Yea, I say we honored his requests in full!”; “Took us bloody long enough!”; “Hehehe, he said bloody”. During their heated discussion and mockery you hear faint sounds coming from the chamber above. Sounds you recognize.
Still standing in the living room you quickly glance out of one of the small windows and catch a glimpse of a very young elf landing on the ground with a hard thud. It’s you! Shards of glass shatter around you as you remain there, completely knocked out and perfectly hidden in a big pile of forest leaves. Nobody here inside with you seems to have noticed anything.

The imps continue “See here, Balthasar, he’s now petrified. I’d say that qualifies as terminated.”; “ Yes, besides, if he is ever unpetrified we’ll know.”; “I bet you anything we’ll see him again soon if he is ever unpetrified, his haunting dreams will lead him astray I’m sure!”. “How about this one?”; “Alfred? Samuel will get to him soon enough.”; “That’s totally barbaric of Samuel, the old man will soon die of illness anyway!”; “Let’s cross him off the list”. “Morningstar?”; “Pay attention you idiot! We petrified him already, he’s as good as dead. We even brought proof!”. “Silvan Santi?”; “He’s gone! Well, not really is he, or is he?”. They all laugh for a bit. “So this is the last one then?” and all of them nod silently as the fallen angel lifts his heave mace once more.

“There, as the old man requested in the exchange.”; “Yes, that’s the last of ‘em, the last of the Guardians of the Seal”; “Sealed their fate didn’t it?”; “Hahahaha!”. “Let’s go see the old man and claim our end of the bargain!”; “Oh finally! How I have craved to score his powerful soul!”. The imps and the fallen angel dissolve in the shadows, leaving behind the mystery of the burned cabin that’s been haunting your memories so long…
