Feeling desperation at the idea of the heir to the Winterclaw house being a magical dunce, Neodym's father contacted Ioth Academy, where both he and his wife had trained and in fact met. The Academy's representatives were initially skeptical, as his description of his son made it seem like he had no magical ability at all, but humored him with a visit out of respect for his status as a 4th generation alumni of the Academy. Where Neodym's father saw failure and embarrassment in his son's magical tinkering, the Academy reps saw potential, and agreed to accept him. Before he left, his father told Ned he would come back a great wizard, or he would not come back at all.
