With his father's last words to him ringing in his mind, he was determined to be as great a wizard as he could be, or at least look like one. If there was one thing he noticed about his parents', and especially his father's reaction, it's that appearances were more important than truth. He focused hard on his studies, determined to turn his magical tinkering into something that he could use to mimic the spell casting of real mages. Though a few teachers tried to convince that artifice was just as legitimate as another other field of magical studies, that didn't matter to Ned, he had to "be" a wizard. Though being social was of secondary importance, he did take notice and start to hang around the more successful wizard-looking students, and ended up being one of Kraius's followers, though he could the number of times they actually had a direction conversation on one finger.
