Lacking Heir
Neodym was born to the respected and powerful Winterclaw family. In his particular tribe, political power lies in a handful of families, where magical ability is the most prized asset. The family with the most powerful mages wields the most influence and prestige. Traditionally dragonblood is the source of this magical power, but powerful wizards are also accepted as a way to bolster these ranks. The Winterclaws are one such family, with Neodym's father being a respected dragonblooded sorcerer and head of the house, while his mother a talented wizard. Thus, it was almost scandalous when it was discovered that not only was Neodym seemingly born without the gift of magical dragonblood, but an aparent lack of any ability at all to control and shape magical energy into useful spells, despite the best tutors his father could hire. If he hadn't inherited his father's sharp, dragon-like facial features, some might have even questioned if his mother had been faithful. Yet, even with no doubts about his parentage, his mother was still deeply affected by his lack of magical ability, with some blaming her for her son's lack of magical talent.
