Mentality
Personal history
Scottwick spent his early childhood happily sailing with the Faneuils until his parents disappeared and left him and his sister stranded in Silberheim. He spent his later childhood in Silberheim's childcare system with his older sister Lilabelle, until she was placed into Silberheim's Junior Guard. At 12, Scottwick was assigned to an aging trade master: an solitary, widowed artificer who went by the moniker "Junco". Junco was stubborn and crotchety, and cared deeply for him despite not being outwardly kind or affectionate. Scottwick didn't always see Junco's point of view and tended to lash out after being separated from Lilabelle. After difficult adjustment period, they eventually grew closer despite- or because of- their respective grief. He remained her apprentice/ward for seven years, and they had a pseudo-familial relationship.
Mysterious circumstances concurrent with an offer to work for an underground syndicate led to a falling-out between them. Ignoring her advice, Scottwick left Junco's to take up a position in Vind's secret facility. There, he was granted access to her immense funding and state of the art artificing workshops, but also was far out of his depth in terms of her plans. He worked for her for four years and with her resources, created a number of weapons for her, including the magic extraction device used in Silberheim, magic weapons, and the collars used to chain gods. In this period he also helped summon the concept of Kindness, and bind him as the demon sin Gluttony. Scottwick fell into drug use to cope with the cruelty of his work and was mentally unwell during this period.
Eventually, Scottwick learned too much of Vind and co.,'s plans, and was no longer useful. After having his mind scrambled and his memories redacted by Melancholy, he was cast out of Vind's organization. His life was spared by Melancholy, who had been ordered to kill him. Noah and Gluttony separately found him wandering the woods outside Silberheim, and their care and healing were able to bring him back to health and lucidity.
He joined the God's Hope in his early twenties after Gluttony threw him into Clepsydra's arms to portal him into Marionelle. Since, they have travelled to the kingdoms of Coverberry, the Isles, the Plane of Nightmares, the Feywilds, both Flagfalls, and both the Warrens of Nanasco and the Weaver's Complex beneath it. They traveled to the Provinces most recently. They've been heavily involved in time travel and a divine mission to help the gods of Allotail. (Mostly.)
He has grown close to his friends in the God's Hope and some of the gods and sins whom they have interacted with. Though he trusts his friends implicitly, he struggled with coming clean about his past, until Gluttony spilled the beans on him after being freed from Vind's control. Both Gluttony/Kindness and Scottwick spent about a week(?) back in Silberheim as Vind's captives, for reasons unknown.
While kidnapped, he was advised by the sin Lust to pray to Ginvorous. Afraid and out of options, he did so. Ginvorous offered a pact in exchange for "guiding" Umber, and Ginvorous expressed concern for Umber's wellbeing. Scottwick thought this was a supremely bad idea on Ginvorous's part but agreed anyway. Using the nature of the pact, Ginvorous guided Scottwick through the restoration of many of his memories of his time at Vind's. Ginvorous also granted him the ability to help others work through the same, on a smaller scale. With Ginvorous's help and the help of a forgotten automaton, Scottwick was able to dismantle the magic extraction device.
The party's rescue caused enough chaos for both Scottwick and Kindness to escape Vind and the rest of the sins. As of now, everyone is relatively safe and reunited, pending the end of the world as they know it. (to be continued...)
Education
Scottwick has a very strong education and work history in artificing, engineering, and mathematics. He has a basic education in literacy, but little formal schooling.
Employment
He was an artificer's apprentice in Silberheim for seven years, and for four years served as Vind's artificer and weapons developer. Currently, he is traveling with the God's Hope adventuring party, and enjoys whatever employment status that entails.
Accomplishments & Achievements
- an accomplished artificer and has designed several prominent or useful machines. One of his recent creations is "Lovey", a steel defender who assists the party in battle
- an experienced dumpster diver and scavenger
- was present for the exorcism of the sin of Wrath from Drosselmeyer
- after leaving the Gala, was able to stumble through combat with a Behir in Flagfall and survive
- accompanied Koal and Lazuli to the Plane of Nightmares to successfully recover Umber from Ginvorous's possession
- The God's Hope survived an encounter with the sin Envy in White Flagfall and were able to help their travelling friend, Noah
- Accompanied the God's Hope to the Weaver's Complex in Nanasco, where Gluttony agreed to retrieve the comatose god Briel. Gluttony was successful in this endeavor, and looked smashingly cool while doing so.
- Survived combat with Bailor along with the rest of the God's Hope
- Once drew a fake moustache on the God of Justice
- achieved title "Archbishop of the Church of Heart", for better or worse of said church
Failures & Embarrassments
- He tends to have poor judgement, and has an unfortunate tendency to get embarrassingly drunk before critical events.
- He at some point had to be rescued by Noah after one such event
- Had significant involvement with Vind, most of which he's unable to recall. He is responsible for creating some of her most critical technology.
Mental Trauma
Scottwick has some distrust for authority. He has learned not to rely too much on his own memory. He also would like to see the party get thrown around less in fights.
He has a conflicted relationship with his past and hometown.
He fears rejection, which can lead him to inappropriate secrecy and avoidance of topics that he is ashamed of.
A personal history of loss and hardship has influenced his anxiety surrounding social connections and affection, which can lead him to put too much, or too little, trust in others.
A past of poverty and food insecurity has lent itself to an amount of hoarding-type habits and scavenging impulses.
Intellectual Characteristics
- very curious
- something of an arcane engineering prodigy
- impulsive
- emotionally driven and rather suggestible
Morality & Philosophy
Scottwick wants to do the right thing, but can be swayed to act on flawed logic. He places his highest priority on the people in his circle and those he is personally loyal to. At his core, he doesn't want people to suffer anymore and wants to see his loved ones happy and content.

Contacts & Relations
Party:
Lazuli: Summoning wizard extraordinaire with great taste in sweaters and hugs. Fellow nerd and close friend. Scottwick loves Laz and thinks that Lazuli is kind, though melancholy. Lazuli seems to carry a lot of emotional weight with him. Scottwick thinks Lazuli has a good heart, is incredibly resilient, and has been touched by times when Lazuli opened up. He trusts Laz deeply and loves hearing about his sisters and the stories Laz tells. Lazuli made an impression on Scottwick early, being the deciding factor in Scottwick's choice to stay with the group after the night on the beach in Coverberry. Laz's drawings of the party make Scottwick smile. He appreciates how supportive Lazuli is of the team and his compassion. Laz is always quick to care and support his friends--Scottwick thinks he's incredibly genuine and is in awe of his vulnerability and sensitivity.
He worries about Laz's family situation, particularly after learning of his pact and its nature. When Lazuli lost his magic, Scottwick disliked the fact that Laz felt useless and is very glad that Laz has powers now that he seems happy with. He also worries about Laz's self-sacrificing tendencies quite a bit. Sometimes Laz seems to hover, but Scottwick doesn't mind and quite enjoys being fussed over. He doesn't mind Laz's apparent investment in his love life, either. He loves Laz a lot, and is happy that Laz was able to get in touch with his family. He regards Laz as an authority on most matters social and trusts Laz's judgment in a sticky situation. Laz's magic is very powerful and nifty, and Scottwick thinks it suits him. Still, Scottwick keeps an eye on Laz in battle, as he knows Laz isn't able to take too many hits.
He considers Laz to be a fellow nerd and researcher. He's apt to ask Laz for advice or feedback on projects, and regards Laz's opinions highly. Scottwick knows that Laz believes in him, and he doesn't want to let Laz down. He finds it easiest to be vulnerable and honest with Laz, and knows Laz will be honest if there's something he disagrees with. He trusts Laz to handle destroying any dangerous research that Scottwick may have left behind in Silberheim.
After Laz hugged him after the revelation that Scottwick's parents were alive but transformed, Scottwick considers Laz to be forever family. He thinks that the way Laz broke the chain on Seren was magnificently cool and is very grateful for how he was able to save the day. He is a little bit worried about how unfearful Laz was of going to go ask questions of Seren when Seren seemed to be an unstable and violent dragon, because he does not want his friendship with Laz to end with Laz getting eaten. It worked out, though, and Laz's intuitions proved to help them avoid a confrontation!
He'd do nearly anything if Laz needed it, and takes Laz's opinions very seriously. Lately, Laz seems to have a little more spark than when he had his pact; he's certainly a lot sassier. Scottwick enjoys this side of him. (to be continued)
Koal: An honest close friend with good ideas, cooking skills to die for, and a punch to die from. Scottwick thinks that Koal is reliable, fun, and easy to connect with. Koal was quiet at first, but Scottwick has enjoyed Koal's company and feels a sense of camaraderie with him, particularly at the gala and when cooking and chatting at the beach. He looks up to Koal quite a bit, thinks he's a good person, and though starstruck by Koal at first, has come to realize that Koal is as unsure about what is going on as he is. Scottwick finds Koal easy to talk to and likes his sense of humor. He resonates with Koal's challenges of being disconnected from family and roots, but doesn't entirely know how to approach Koal about it other than to support him through discovering new things and finding closure for old losses.
He's happy that Umber has returned and that Koal is able to be with him. Scottwick is deeply loyal to Koal, and doesn't want to disappoint him. Scottwick thinks Koal deserves the world (and probably a break). He's working on being more honest with Koal, in general, but sometimes worries that Koal will react rashly to things. Sometimes, Koal reacts to things that don't seem like a big deal to Scottwick in ways that Scottwick doesn't understand. Knowing that Koal will punch in his defense is a great comfort and makes him feel very safe. He fully believes that at the end of the day, he and Koal would have each others' backs.
Scottwick is also very curious about Koal's past and background now after learning about the fight in Bridge City and Koal's previous adventures. He really wants to know more about what happened when Koal was at school and how Koal got kicked out, but after visiting, has decided that he doesn't particularly care for the school. He hopes Koal's roommate will be found safe and sound. Additionally, Scottwick has a...scholarly interest in Koal's newly revealed godly power. He's also very curious about Koal's family legacy. He wants to study how Koal returned earth magic to the mud.
He's noticed that Koal has a tendency to jump into the line of fire; and is often in need of patching up. Or bleeding less. He knows Koal doesn't seem to go out trying to make enemies, but trouble finds him nonetheless. One of Scottwick's aspirations is to see that Koal stays alive until their journey's end. He wants to throw flowers at Koal's wedding. Scottwick was willing to live in Koal's basement forever if necessary. (to be continued)
Amari: A force of nature. Scottwick thinks that Amari is fierce and finds her protectiveness of the party comforting. He first came to respect her love of bacon, and has since become both awed by and fearful of her dining habits. He grown to trust her as he finds her reassurance, bluntness and presence grounding. She seems devoted to pain, but her fearlessness and kindness are touching. He's not sure he could get behind all of Loviator's teachings, but feels drawn to some of her principles.
Amari always seems quick to manifest food, drink, or advice as needed, which Scottwick appreciates. She seems to have a talent for relationship advice and getting things done. He finds her taste in clothing somewhat baffling, but trusts that she knows what is best--a notion which has proven... passionately fruitful. When she had tucked Gluttony's pants in for Scottwick in Gluttony's bedroom and implicitly covered for an approved of his thievery, she had gained his complete trust, loyalty, and confidence. Though intimidated at first by Amari's directness, Scottwick has come to like her a lot, viewing her as a reliable friend--he'd trust her not only with his life, but the lives of those he loves as well. He thinks he misunderstood her at first and feels like he's getting to know her properly at last--she has been empathetic and kind even if she doesn't express it in the most orthodox ways. Her encouragement has helped him grow in confidence and feel more like himself after the events at Preacher's library. He hopes to someday repay the favor. Scottwick thinks that with Amari's advisement, he might even get lucky with a love life. He appreciates her attention to the importance of being well-stocked on food.
He would like to go out drinking with her some time and learn more about her, her mission, and her past, if she's willing. In the meantime, he's comfortable just having her and her whip around. She's definitely one of the strongest party members and one of their first lines of defense if they run into trouble.
(to be continued)
Tourmaline: Tourmaline is hardworking and saved the party from Mallo. Although Scottwick finds him a bit grouchy, he's convinced that Tourmaline has good intentions and a good heart. He would trust Tourmaline with his life, but wishes Tourmaline answered questions more specifically--though lately, Scottwick isn't convinced that Tourmaline is privy to any more information than the God's Hope is. He views Tourmaline most favorably of the divine or divine-aligned contacts they have made pertaining to Gods' Hope so far. Scottwick is glad to see him around more. However, Tourmaline always seems to be working very hard. Scottwick wonders if he can get Tour to loosen up a little, the cleric could probably use a break.
Since Tourmaline began travelling with them, he has come to regard the slight distance that Tourmaline places himself at as a challenge. Every hug with Tourmaline is a victory. That said, he respects Tourmaline and trusts his advice, weighting it highly. Even though Tourmaline doesn't always see eye-to-eye with him (or let Scottwick do what he wants without objection), he thinks of Tourmaline as a friend, and someone safe. If Tourmaline says something's a bad idea...generally there's some kind of reasoning for it. (to be continued)
Preacher: The god of knowledge (and patron god of artificers, among many, many others). Scottwick is tentatively loyal to him and trusts him more than most of the gods, but Scottwick isn't sure if he is afraid of Preacher, wants to impress him, or is suspicious of him. Maybe all three; either way, he doesn't fully trust Preacher and is under the impression that Preacher is secretive. He thinks it might be wise to be on his best behavior around the god. He's not going to start praying to Preacher anytime soon or anything, but...he has hopes that they could get along. He wants to know what the source of the tension between Preacher and Gluttony is... (to be continued)
Ginvorous: Umber's patron and an enigmatic entity. Scottwick loathed him at first for taking Umber and was reluctant to give him even an ounce of respect. He is now trying to get more comfortable with Ginvorous, though a sizeable amount of fear remains by way of Ginvorous's large role in their world and his control over Scottwick by means of their pact. (to be continued)
Noah: A traveller named Noah claims to have met Scottwick before, but Scottwick previously denied this. Scottwick is always happy to see him. He feels like he owes Noah a debt of gratitude. (to be continued)
Umber: At first, Scottwick didn't care for Umber's blatant and seemingly ruthless thievery, but after getting to know him more has become very fond of Umber. He's concerned for Umber's wellbeing, and is willing to fight Vind not only for how he himself was treated, but for how Umber was treated by her.
After travelling to the Plane of Nightmares, he wants Umber to have a peaceful future. Scottwick considers Umber a friend and is pleased to see him when they cross paths. He trusts Umber more than the gods, and would help him bury a body if asked. Scottwick was willing to bind his soul to serving Umber's emotional wellbeing forever. Scottwick is still not aware that Umber had tried to get Koal to leave him to death or worse at Vind's hands instead of rescuing him.
Sable: Scottwick thinks Sable is intimidating, and he thinks she's probably good at most things she tries to do. He respects her and wouldn't want to cross her--ever. He has a great admiration for how much she cares for Umber and the rogues and would go to significant lengths to help her if needed. He thinks her family airship is really really cool and would like to know how to build one. Her family is nice, as well, and helped the God's Hope travel across to Bridge City.
Bismuth: Bismuth is big and a bit frightening. Scottwick will be hesitant to trust his word at face value again.
Alistair: Scottwick's first impressions of Alistair are that he is interesting, but very unsettling. He didn't appreciate Alistair wanting to taste Lazuli.
Prince Vilho: Scottwick's feelings about Vilho are colored by bias. He privately (and as of s3, publicly) considers Vilho kind, but a bit inept. He regrets that White Flagfall and Vilho's family were destroyed with the sin Envy's interference.
Seren: He trusts Seren because he has to. Additionally, he finds Seren sympathetic, and as Seren did not hurt them and was not in control of his actions, Scottwick sees no reason to hurt him. He wants Seren's godhood to be reunited to him and does not regret that Seren being freed means that Vind is more likely to come after them. He trusts Seren to take care of his parents while they are adventuring. (to be continued)
Wrath: Has to die. An exorcism didn't cut it. Crimes: Genocide of Marionelle, hating Koal, "making moves" on his sister, collaborating with Vind, and stealing the body of Lilabelle's boss. Scottwick intends to kick Wrath very hard where the sun doesn't shine.
Envy: A problematic sin. Scottwick isn't particularly loyal to Loviator, but Amari is, and Envy took Loviator's weapon. Also, Envy had a large hand in the widespread decimation of White Flagfall and its people. Tried to chandelier a bunch of people??? Wanted to drop him in the ocean? Generally very mean. 0/10 stars.
Warden Theon/Gluttony/Kindness: A bit hypothermic. He gives Scottwick attention. To Scottwick, the physical embodiment of "!?!". Gluttony has a lot of power over Scottwick, and Scottwick is not sure where he stands with Gluttony in terms of their relationship. He was initially blindsided by Gluttony's flirtation, but elected to go along with it. While Scottwick had initial reservations about the Weaver's Complex and Gluttony's role in it, he found both surprisingly easygoing, though he still cannot sort through his confusion about it.
He had plenty of questions for Gluttony after their encounter with Bailor, but was frustrated by Gluttony's reluctance or inability to answer any of them. Something seemed off about the situation, including the fact that Gluttony seemed...familiar. That feeling of disquiet grew when Lust dropped cryptic hints about Gluttony at the festival of Briel and Ryga. He was glad that he was able to break Vind's chain on Gluttony by speaking his second name, Kindness. Scottwick didn't get much of a chance to process the implications before getting kidnapped along with Gluttony himself by some of the sin siblings.
Scottwick hopes he is more than just entertainment for Gluttony. He initially had misgivings about Gluttony's inclination to kill Bailor, but after remembering some of their past, Scottwick is willing to look past some of Gluttony's darker history. Neither of them have clean hands, and it's who Gluttony is today that matters. Whoever that is.
Lust: He trusts Lust somewhat, but while cryptically helpful and harmless, Lust's evasive hint-dropping has made him start to question things. He wants to know what Lust knows, and he wants to know what Lust knows that he knows about Lust that he doesn't know he knows. He hopes the party will discover Lust's second name and free them from Vind's control.
Melancholy: The party seems to be somewhat enamored with Melancholy, and Scottwick gets it but is also absolutely terrified of the Marinara Sauce. Being close to Melancholy makes him break out into a cold sweat. He keeps an eye on Melancholy's grabbing and mind-wiping radius at all times. It's not like Scottwick done more dangerous things with the sins than just hanging out around Melancholy, but the idea that Vind could command Melancholy to do something that could hurt his friends, torment and puppetteer them, or Clorox their memories leaves him very on edge.
If things were different, he would probably be all over chatting and playing with Melancholy, who seems to be pretty much just an innocent kid. Scottwick thinks Melancholy didn't deserve to be caught up in this, and hopes they find a way to free the Sin.
Lady Vind: Public enemy no. 1. She tricked Scottwick into working for her and then labor trafficked him for a total of four years. She also was the start of his substance abuse problems by getting him addicted to Galtin.
Lilabelle Faneuil: Scottwick loves his sister more than himself. They were everything to each other as kids, and for a long time were all each other could rely on. There was a lot of chaos going on when he and Libby reunited after Scottwick's 4+ years of being missing and presumed dead, but he was glad to see her. He's worried that Wrath might try to hold her hostage or otherwise harass her while she works in Silberheim, but he respects that she is loyal to her new life. He's glad she's been able to keep herself safe, for now. If anything bad happens to Lilabelle while the group is adventuring, Scottwick might just drop everything and go to war with whoever hurt her.
After years of running away to find her and working with Vind, post-reuniting Scottwick has finally moved on from reaching for the closeness and reliance they had on each other in their childhood. Leaving her behind hurt, but he's happy that she enjoys the life she came to choose. He hopes to talk to her again soon, and looks forward to hearing what she thinks of the Bible.
He hasn't told her yet that he was kind of the one behind the magic getting sucked out of Silberheim, but since he's afraid that she might actually flatten him for that, he is tactfully saving that conversation for another day. Pretty soon, he'll also need to break the news to her that their parents are still around.
Former Party Members:
Pem: Scottwick greatly appreciated Pem's use of "Haste" to help him investigate the technology of Coverberry's trains. He feels that Pem is very bold, likes her inquisitive nature, and admires her initiative and confidence. He appreciates her support and finds her helpful, kind, and polite. They seemed to share discomfort with the service at Waterworks. He particularly hopes that her home is alright and she'll be able to contact her loved ones and find them safe. He thinks she has very good ideas.
Party Members In Absentia
Corduroy Jones: Scottwick hasn't gotten much chance to get to know Corduroy yet, but he's already very grateful for Corduroy coming to help him. The first thing Scottwick did to Corduroy was headbutt him (it was a stressful situation!), but he's glad that Corduroy didn't seem to take it personally. So far he thinks Corduroy is pretty funny, and he's happy to have another tiefling and an accent-neighbor with the party. He gave half of the Holy Bagel to Corduroy in a gesture of gratitude and good will, and hopes they'll become good friends. He hopes to see Corduroy again soon.
Honorary & Occupational Titles
Archbishop of the Church of Heart
Wealth & Financial state
Scottwick has known both poverty and a stable, if frugal lifestyle in Silberheim. The God's Hope seems to have a constantly fluctuating financial state. These days, he is generally poor, often living off of someone else's gold. Usually Laz's or Umber's. He has zero gold to his own name.
Family Ties
He has a mother, father, and a sister. His sister is currently in Silberheim. His mother and father are currently a violin and a cello respectively, under the charge of Seren until Seren can be restored or the score to return them to their humanoid states can be found.
His artificing teacher/foster parent is Junco, an aaracokra from Silberheim. Unbeknownst to him, she passed away from age between the time when Scottwick left her shop and when the God's Hope returned to it. He had a letter to her that was unsent, and while there was no anger between them at the end, they never officially got to make amends. He didn't fully understand her teachings until after she passed.
Religious Views
Scottwick has come to grudgingly respect some, but not all, of the gods.
Social Aptitude
Extroverted and prone to nervous energy. He was once slow to anger, quick to forgive, and happy to make new friends. He can be high-strung and impulsive, but loves to have fun and act silly.
Mannerisms
Scottwick is expressive and has enthusiastic body language. His hands and tail move freely when he talks and often give away his emotions. He is a poor liar.
Hobbies & Pets
In his downtime, Scottwick enjoys scavenging, spending time with his friends, working on schematics, tinkering, partying and party-adjacent activities, roaming city streets, shopping, and sightseeing.
His "pet" steel defender is The Esteemed General Lovelace Longfellow I of God's Hope, nicknamed "Lovey". What Lovey lacks in personality is generally made up for in utility.
Speech
Scottwick has a noticeable accent that becomes more pronounced when he is drunk or excited. He develops a stutter at times.
