The major events and journals in Brego's history, from the beginning to today.

Brego collected several empty water skins from the saddles and walked over to the stamping mare. He dropped the skins near her, and while stroking her mane to calm her he whispered, “Go now to the Spirit Sands, my sister.” In one smooth motion, he drew one of the curved knives and sliced open her throat. He gently eased the mare to the ground. The stallions heard her cry and smelled her blood, and they both voiced their protest as they reared against their bonds. With the mare’s head cradled in one strong arm, Brego filled the skins as her blood ran freely from the wound. He whispered to her as her breathing slowed. He told her of how she would soon run free with their ancestors until she returned to this world. He thanked her for the gift of her blood, which would keep him alive. “We will meet again,” he said, “on the Spirit Sands, or in the next life.” -- from Blood of the Desert by B.K. Bass
